During a golden-hour harbor stroll, I noticed Maya writing in her journal on a bench by the sea. When I commented on her script, she invited me to join her.

We talked about the beauty of the remote island and small things that give life meaning.

She told me she often encounters ladybugs. Because they appear alongside spring flowers, she sees them as tiny but reliable symbols of hope and emotional renewal.

When we parted, we walked along a stone wall, and Maya prompted us to stop to smell the roses.

As a young girl, long before her wedding day, our gorgeous bride learned to embrace this deep lesson:
"A meaningful life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass,
but about learning to enjoy dancing in the rain."

So, when faced with April showers, arm and arm with her loving groom, they danced away.

So many of their loving family and friends reported afterwards that they could feel a timeless rainbow rising above their celebration well into the night.

Peace and healing with Rico on the Croton River.

During this dark time. I've wanted to share poignant and inspiring moments of Cubanos I met during eight trips to the island since Obama's historic opening a decade ago.

The photos portrayCubans across the island living ordinary lives. Now
the cruel Trump and Rubio blockade of the island has plunged it into darkness, hunger, disease, and misery.

The magnitude of this unwarranted cruelty feels beyond human comprehension.

It's true, the Cuban government has failed its people. But instead of surgical skill and thoughtful strategy, the Trump policy has smashed to pieces everything and everybody.Trump's blockade hasn't required the bombs Putin rains on Ukraine, or bombs and bulldozing Netanyahu,Biden and Trump have inflicted on Gaza and beyond. The silent weapon of the naval blockade has been even more consequential, rendering Cuban society unlivable...no food,no fuel,no medicine, no nada.

May these photos of ordinary lives now lost across the island help give perspective on the horrific story.

Rico and Ruby arrived at our Westchester, N.Y. rescue shelter in a FedEx truck in crates with their puppy litters 14 years ago. We were told they were rescued from a beach in Puerto Rico. We chose one from each litter - and they've been bonded as loving brother and sister ever since.

We couldn't imagine living without them. And we don't think they could imagine living without each other. (On their mattress in and )

“Where mustangs belong only to the sky, the mountains, the wild, and each other.”

When our pickup entered the locked gate of remote Sky MSky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuaryortheast New Mexico, we were awed by the rangeland’s rugged beauty and solitude.

How would we ever find 17 mustangs on 1,000 acres of sun-drenched meadows and mesas?

We didn’t have to wait long, or search far, for the wild horses to appear.

At first a pair came to investigate us on the lower grassland. Then, as we four-wheeled up a precarious rocky path to the mesita, the other mustangs approached from distant hills in a pack.

They circled our trucks, the bravest nuzzling against human hands. It seemed they also anticipating tasty, heavy bricks of vitamins that our guide, sanctuary co-founder Karen Herman, offered for their nourishment.

The 17 mustangs seemed remarkably healthy for living in the wild. Saved from lives of starvation, abuse, injury, holding pens, or probable slaughter, they rippled in the sun as one, flourishing in their newfound safety.

Sanctuary management keeps their population low so they can share the land's bounty in balance with native wildlife—coyotes, foxes, bear, mountain lion, and deer.

It was moving to encounter this wild herd, and a gratifying lesson that when we commit to caring for any beings that are broken and lost, they can recover... and flourish.
