Calla lilies and black ribbon. That was the first decision.🤍

Everything else fell in behind it. Ivory invitations, a dress with structure, a cathedral veil down a hundred-year-old staircase.

Blue toile tablecloths, a painted monogram, and a bouquet you could see from across the lawn.

Kayla wanted maximalism and never wavered on it. Coral ranunculus, marigold roses, cornflower delphinium, blush dahlias, layered dense enough that every table read like a still life. Herella is one of my favorite teams to work with for exactly this reason. Jackie built the florals and the entire design world around them, down to the gold bud vases and pleated lamps on the toile.

Glen Foerd earns every bit of this. The mansion has a grand staircase, chandeliers, and second floor light that does most of the work for you. The boathouse lawn opens straight onto the Delaware with sailboats sitting in the frame like they were placed there, and at sunset the sky over the water went the softest pink I have seen at that venue. I want to shoot here every August.

The seating display was Monet. An impressionist painting scaled to a full backdrop with their monogram over it, and a wall of blue envelopes beside it holding a handwritten letter to every guest. One hundred and forty of them.

They married each other in front of all of those people. No officiant, their own vows, a Celtic knot tied between them, a string duet from Allegro Music playing them out. Kayla traded her veil for an embroidered cape after the ceremony. Dinner from Jamie Hollander | Philadelphia Wedding Venues, a pink cake with blue roses from Sweet T's® Bakeshop, dancing to No Macarena DJ, and Sicily on Monday.

I gave Cheyenne direction. She gave it back to me with breath under it. Every frame, she kept a soft movement. Nothing ever landed flat. I’d set the shape, and she’d fill it with air, and that’s the part I can’t teach anyone.

She knew exactly what she wanted her portraits to feel like. Not just the palette, but the mood of the day. When a bride sees it clearly, my job becomes even more of a dream. 🤍

Jennifer took off running across the lawn, twirled, let Jake scoop her up at Nassau Hall and I didn’t have to ask twice.

Their Princeton University engagement session started under an umbrella. Rain on the marble steps, the two of them tucked underneath it, laughing at how the day was going. It cleared by the time we walked over to the ivy, and the light stayed soft the rest of the evening.

We covered a lot of campus. The stone arches of the cloister walk, the terrace off the courtyard, the steps under that Gothic archway. But the frames I keep coming back to are the ones in between. Jake picking her up mid-sentence. Jennifer catching her dress before it caught the wind. The two of them walking and forgetting I was there at all.

Princeton now, Ashford Estate in May 2027. Jennifer and Jake, I am so glad this is where we started. 🤍

Embossed florals you can feel with your thumb, calligraphy addressed by hand, vintage stamps chosen one at a time. This is what a first impression looks like when someone actually builds it.

Everything that followed answered back to that suite. The same soft rose in the envelope, in the wax seal on the menus, in the garden roses tucked into the ceremony urns, in the blooms circling the base of the cake. Nothing loud, nothing competing, just one palette carried all the way through by people who clearly talked to each other before a single stem was cut.

Swan House gave us the rest. Georgian stone, old sycamores, that terrace wall with the arches that has been standing since 1928. You put cane chairs and pedestals of blush and ivory in front of that and there is very little left to do but pay attention.

Then dinner on the lawn beneath the columns, gold flatware, scalloped rims, sculpted florals pressed into buttercream, and a table that looked like it had always been there.

This is the kind of Atlanta wedding day I want to keep photographing. Beautiful because of the people who made it, not in spite of them.

Grace’s mom told me her daughter’s life in the military holds very little softness or color. Then she designed this.

Grace and Noah met and fell in love at the Naval Academy. She became a Marine officer, he went Special Forces, and the years since have been measured in deployments rather than seasons. The Arctic. Eight months off the coast of South America. She was almost entirely unreachable for most of the planning, which meant her mother, who works in design, dreamt the whole thing up on her behalf and built her daughter a day made of everything she doesn’t get to have.

Every choice here came from the grounds themselves. They looked at what blooms at the Pearl S. Buck Estate in August and let the perennial beds set the palette, so the tables filled with white hydrangea and pink garden roses and dahlias and little chamomile daisies that looked like they’d been gathered on the walk in. Scalloped rattan chargers, green pressed glass goblets, a floral runner spilling over the edge, and plain white linen underneath so all of it had room to speak. Overhead in the pavilion, a drippy ceiling of greenery with woven lanterns tucked into it, glowing over a checkerboard dance floor.

Then the rain came, and we moved, and it turned out beautifully anyway.
For one day in Bucks County, her whole world was flowers and music and family and Noah. Two days later they were apart again.

I gave up trying to choose a favorite frame from Erin and Thom’s day somewhere around image four. 🤍

It starts with this one. Their bridal party rushing in around them, arms out, bouquets flying, everyone laughing at once. You can feel the sound of it.

Then it keeps going. A butterfly landing on Erin’s veil. Erin sitting in front of that blue es**rt wall in all that silk like she had all the time in the world. Portraits under the trees with the water behind them.

Soft blue, white, and lemons on every table. The saxophonist. The black and white dance floor. Those handwritten notes they left for each other.

Some days you photograph. Some days you get to be part of. This was the second kind. 🥂
