Authenticity is a myth.
As AI slop fills our feeds, we’re seeing a renewed cry for authenticity. But, do we actually want that? What does it even mean to be truly authentic?
What’s an authentic cherry blossom tree? In the winter when their branches are bare? The spring when their white and pink blooms are in full glory? The summer when their green leaves make them fade into the background? Or the autumn when those green leaves turn shades of orange and red just before they fall to the ground?
The answer is all of those are authentic moments for a cherry blossom in a given time and place. There is no one authentic. We’re rooted in a way, much like the trunk of a cherry blossom, but how we demonstrate that changes depending on the situation. That’s not being inauthentic. It’s natural.
When I help a client tell their story, I’m not trying to find one core truth to them. I want to explore their multitudes. We are all a different version of our authentic self depending the role we’re playing at that moment.
Maybe allowing for those variations in our own selves is the most authentic thing we can do, much like a cherry blossom.
