I went to Northern Liberties in Philadelphia to have my portrait made today by master daguerreotypist, Jerry Spagnoli . The is one of the first photographic processes that produced a unique fixed image with a simple box camera. It is a demanding, precise, and time-consuming process that yields one of the most detailed and sharp images of all historical and present-day processes. And because of its highly reflective surface, it has ethereal and ephemeral qualities, appearing and disappearing depending on how we look at it. Thank you Jerry!

One of the greatest joys I had teaching , beyond the very fact of teaching at Parsons and interacting with young talented students with new and fresh ideas filled with possibilities in their lives, is that now, whenever I travel, I always seem to run into some former student from five, 10, 20 or 30 years ago. visited with me and made a trip to Antibes with her two young sons who were absolutely fascinating, intelligent and engaged. Would not trade these times for the world! See you Friday for dinner by yours truly!

PRIX PICTET
ALFREDO JAAR
Chilean artist, architect and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar, whose politically engaged work explores images, memory and the urgencies of the contemporary world, will be honored at the Théâtre Antique as the recipient of the 11th Prix Pictet for The End, his series devoted to Utah’s Great Salt Lake. Appearing alone on stage, Jaar reflects on this series before turning to more recent projects that extend beyond photography into a powerful reflection on ecology, perception and the power of images.

His obsessions are those of a Chilean, strongly imbued with French culture, whose family was driven into exile by Chile’s dictatorship, and who now looks at the world from New York. His presentation included a survey of dictators, authoritarians and autocrats as world leaders. This video depicts Henry Kissinger, the worst war criminal in the history of the world, responsible for over 4 million deaths, at 103 years old.

His obsessions are those of a Chilean, strongly imbued with French culture, whose family was driven into exile by Chile’s dictatorship, and who now looks at the world from New York. His presentation included a survey of dictators, authoritarians and autocrats as world leaders in the next video, depicting all of the current dictators and power.

Alfredo Jaar draws on an urgent topic of our times, responding to the invasion of Ukraine and European migration policy, including the current debate about naturalization in Germany. In the central rotunda, he presents an art installation that consists of one million German passports behind a high security glass wall. This is the number of people that former chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed to Germany in 2015. But this is also the number of people who later rejected her and her party CDU and voted for the right-wing party AFD. The installation questions citizenship and identity, in the face of an increasing refugee crisis due to climate change and ongoing conflicts as well as the unequal treatment of refugees depending on their origin.

This project is dedicated to Okwui Enwezor (October 23, 1963, Calabar, Nigeria – March 15, 2019, Munich, Germany).
