Do you dread family photos? I would say we all do in some way. But the pain is worth the gain. So I'm sharing some tips on how to make your photo session FUN!

Here's what actually works for getting real, genuine smiles out of kids during a family session:
✨ Don't say "smile!" I know, wild concept. But forced smiles look... forced. Instead, I get them laughing by being absolutely ridiculous. Think silly sounds, dad jokes, and the occasional armpit noise. You're welcome.
✨ Build in 5 minutes of play first. Let the kids warm up to me before I point a camera at them. We'll chase, we'll race, we'll do something goofy — and then the magic happens naturally.
✨ Bring a bribe. No shame. Lollipops for after the session? A trip to get ice cream? A new toy waiting in the car? USE IT. Parenting is survival and I fully support it. 🍦
✨ Schedule around nap time — not during it. A tired toddler is a WILD toddler. Golden hour is beautiful but not if your 2-year-old turns into a pumpkin at 7pm. Know your kid!
✨ Lower your expectations and raise your fun. The families who have the BEST sessions are the ones who come in loose and ready to laugh. The "perfect" pose matters so much less than the real moment.

STOP. Before you dress your family for photos, read this!

Every week I get a message that goes something like this: “We just want to wear jeans and white shirts... is that okay?”

And listen — I love you for it. It’s a classic! But let me let you in on a little secret that will take your family photos from “cute” to absolutely FRAME-WORTHY. 👇
Here are my TOP 5 outfit tips for families:

1️⃣ Skip the matchy-matchy. You don’t need to be twins. Coordinate your COLORS, not your outfits. Think navy, cream, and a pop of rust — chef’s kiss. 😘

2️⃣ Texture is your best friend. Denim, linen, knit sweaters, flowy dresses — layers and texture make photos look SO rich and interesting. A flat cotton tee? Not so much.

3️⃣ Avoid busy logos and graphics. That Walmart graphic tee your son refuses to take off? Yeah... we need to have a talk. 😂 Logos pull the eye AWAY from faces — and faces are the whole point!

4️⃣ Go one shade darker than you think. Light colors wash out in bright sun. Jewel tones, earthy tones, and deep hues photograph BEAUTIFULLY.

5️⃣ Comfort = cooperation. Especially for little ones. If they’re itchy, tight, or uncomfortable, you will SEE IT in every single photo. Cute AND comfy wins every time.

Bonus tip? Lay everyone’s outfits on the bed and take a photo of them all together before the session. If they look good together on the bed, they’ll look good together in real life. 🙌

🌅 The time of your session matters MORE than the location.

I say this with love — because I've seen stunning families in mediocre locations at golden hour and I've seen gorgeous parks completely WRECKED by harsh noon sunlight.

Here's your quick guide to timing your family session like a pro 👇

☀️ **Midday: HARD PASS.**
Harsh shadows under the eyes, everyone squinting, and sweaty kids who want to go home. It's a no from me, dawg. 😅

🌄 **Golden Hour (1 hour before sunset): THE SWEET SPOT.**
Warm, glowy, soft light that makes everyone look like they belong in a movie. This is why every photographer is obsessed with it. It's not hype — it's science. ✨

🌅 **The hour after sunrise: UNDERRATED MAGIC.**
Fewer people, cool temperatures, gorgeous light — and honestly? Kids are usually in a WAY better mood in the morning. The catch: you have to actually wake up. ☕ Worth it.

🌥️ **Overcast days: SECRETLY AMAZING.**
Cloudy skies act like a giant softbox. Even light, no squinting, beautiful skin tones. Don't cancel your session because of clouds — embrace them!

Mother’s Day always makes me think about all the women in this community 🤍

The moms raising babies while juggling a million other things behind the scenes. The women trying their best every single day, even when they’re exhausted. The moms balancing work, family, dreams, stress, healing, and still somehow continuing to show up for everyone around them.

I’m also thinking about the women carrying heavy hearts today. The ones walking through infertility, loss, grief, or longing for a child. I know today can bring a mix of emotions, and I just want you to know there’s room for all of it here 🤍

Whether today feels happy, hard, beautiful, emotional, or a little bit of everything… you are seen and loved.

I feel really lucky to photograph so many strong, caring women and families. Thank you for letting me be a small part of your stories 💗

I almost talked myself out of posting today.

Between kids, work, and trying to keep up with everything… I kept thinking, “who even cares what I post anyway?”

But here’s the thing I’ve learned after doing this for 10+ years…

The posts you don’t feel like sharing are usually the ones people need the most.

Not the perfect ones.
Not the aesthetic ones.
Just the real ones.

Because behind every “put together” business or account… there’s someone juggling a million things, second guessing themselves, and still showing up anyway.
