What a magnificent photo and story! My visit to Scotland included time to see these ruins but my photos aren't nearly as dramatic! It reminds me again that photography is not just the best gear - it is skill and determination coupled with great lighting and the eye to see the optimal angles. I was there on a beautiful day with full sun - which was lovely but doesn't measure up next to the grandeur you see here! That's why I continue to take classes and attend workshops.

This fortress didn't just survive the storms. It saved Scotland. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Dunnottar Castle stands on a sheer 160-foot sea stack on the Aberdeenshire coast, and it is one of the most dramatic pieces of land in Scotland. But what happened inside these walls in 1651 is what makes it truly unforgettable.

When Oliver Cromwell's army swept through Scotland, the Honours of Scotland — the Crown, the Sceptre, and the Sword of State, the oldest Crown Jewels in Britain — were locked inside Dunnottar. Cromwell's forces besieged the castle for eight months. They never got in. And when the garrison finally surrendered, the Honours were already gone, smuggled out by a local woman hidden under her clothing and buried beneath the floor of a nearby church.

The Crown Jewels of Scotland survived because of one woman's courage and one impregnable cliff.

That is what this place is. Not just a ruin. Not just a view. A fortress that held the line when everything Scotland stood for was under threat.

Drop your clan name below if your family has roots in Aberdeenshire or the northeast of Scotland. 👇⚔️

On my photography travels last month, I studied new editing techniques with Noelle Mirabella Photography in the Cotswolds. I also visited a farm with sheep, goats -- and donkeys! I couldn't resist putting this little donkey into the picture!
