Tonight around 10 p.m., I stepped off the subway and walked upstairs onto the street.
The first thing I noticed was the warm summer air. One of those beautiful August nights in New York City.
I could see the George Washington Bridge illuminated through the trees in the park across the street. I could hear Spanish music coming from open apartment windows. Families and kids were sitting outside. Older gentlemen were gathered around card tables on the sidewalk playing dominoes. Kids were riding their bikes up and down the block. Open fire hydrants were spraying water into the street, cooling off the neighborhood on a warm summer night.
And I was just taking it all in.
I love nights like this in New York. Nothing extraordinary was happening, but at the same time, everything was happening. People were outside, music was playing, neighbors were talking, kids were being kids. The city just felt alive.
I remember thinking how much I love this place.
And then I stepped in dog crap. 😂
I immediately yelled out a not-so-nice word.
But at almost the EXACT same moment, a guy walking toward me yelled out too.
I looked at him.
“Did we both just step in the same dog crap at the same time?”
He looked down at his shoe and said, “Yes! I did too!” 😂
We both started laughing.
I said, “It just never fails.”
We laughed again, and as we went our separate ways he said, “Have a good night, bro.”
I said, “You have a good night, my friend.”
And I kept walking with a smile on my face.
Five seconds earlier, this guy and I were complete strangers. Then somehow, stepping in the same pile of dog crap at the exact same time became a New York City bonding experience. 😂
Music coming through the windows. Families on the sidewalk. Dominoes being played. Kids riding bikes. Open fire hydrants. Two strangers laughing together over something neither of us wanted to step in.
Not every beautiful New York moment has to be beautiful.
Sometimes it’s just New York being New York.
There is nothing like a summer night in this city. ❤️
