Finding a Community That Chooses Collaboration Over Competition
In so many industries, and especially in creative ones, it’s easy to believe there’s only room for one person to succeed. That every inquiry is a competition. That every booking someone else gets is one you’ll never see. That sharing locations, techniques, or encouragement somehow takes something away from your own business.
But that hasn’t been my experience along the grand strand. I know it’s there.. but the photographers I’ve met specifically here have shown me something completely different.
They collaborate instead of compete.
They answer questions without making you feel silly for asking.
They share ideas, celebrate each other’s wins, and genuinely want to see one another grow.
They don’t gatekeep.
And maybe the thing that has impacted me the most is how often they recommend one another.
Recently, someone in a local Facebook group was searching for a photographer with a very specific vision. Before I even had the chance to see the post, other photographers in the community were already commenting my name.
To every photographer who has ever recommended me, trusted me, or spoken my name in a room I wasn’t in—thank you.
I see you.
I appreciate you.
I respect you more than you know.
Being recommended by another photographer carries a different kind of weight. It says, “I trust this person enough to send someone my own business could have booked.” That’s not something I take lightly.
And I hope you know that I do the same whenever I can.
Because the truth is, not every photographer is the right fit for every client.
Some people are looking for bold colors. Others want soft film tones. Some want posed portraits, while others are searching for someone who tells stories in a documentary way. There is room for all of us because there are so many different visions, personalities, and artistic styles.
When we stop seeing each other as competition, we create something so much bigger than our own businesses.
We create a community.
One where new photographers feel welcomed instead of intimidated.
One where creativity grows because ideas are shared instead of hidden.
One where clients end up with the photographer who truly fits them best.
That’s the kind of community I want to be part of.
And that’s exactly what I’ve found here in Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas.
So, to every local photographer who cheers others on, answers messages, shares advice, refers inquiries, celebrates wins, and believes there’s enough success to go around..
Thank you for proving that kindness and collaboration still exist.
This little corner of the photography world is better because of you.
