I am terrible at promoting my photography business, but I want to share this because I believe in peace. I want it for our world and in my local communities. There is so much I want to say, but I'll skip the novel and just conclude that my passion for peace-building is why I do pro bono work for causes like this. Lakeville Rotary Club - Lakeville, MN, Together In Peace, and many other local organizations put on a wonderful event for the International Day of Peace. I had the privilege of photographing the wonderful, warmhearted people in attendance for the peace pole dedication at Capserson Park in Lakeville, MN. This may seem like just a tea party, but it's so much more than that. In spending this afternoon with my mother and grandmother, I learned how the tradition of tea parties has been carried through the generations.

My grandmother grew up with six brothers. She reminisced about having to box out at the dinner table just to get a scrap of chicken. There wasn’t time or money for “the finer things” in life.

So, when she finally has a little girl of her own, she wanted to show her a small taste of something nice, and somehow tea sets became the embodiment of that notion. She used to throw tea parties to entice my young, free-spirited mother to eat her lunch. When the sandwiches were cut without crusts and placed on a delicate, floral plate, a mundane PB&J suddenly seemed to transform into something special. In-between climbing trees and riding bikes with the neighborhood kids, it was her attempt to instill some feminine civility into my rambunctious mother.

If she thought my mother was a wild child, neither of them could have imagined what I would have in store for them! My others continued in the footsteps of her mother and bought me miniature tea sets growing up. I must have had dozens by the time I left for college. I started out playing tea party with my dolls, and then my friends, and eventually anyone who came over to my house would get roped into ‘teatime’ consisting of whatever I could get my hands on to feed my ‘guests’.

As the cycle of life would have it, here we are years later, still enjoying our teatime. Only now, we get to have tea together and enjoy each other’s company as adults.

Although I am extremely busy at this season in my life, I am glad I was able to spend a few hours with the ladies in my life, and remembered to grab my camera.
