So many of us wait until we feel “ready” to be seen. Fitter, more confident, more put together. But the people and animals who love us aren’t waiting for that version of us. They love us exactly as we are.
Three years ago today, I photographed Katie and her Andalusian PRE mare, Melosa.
I first met Katie at a tack sale. She told me she wished she could wear a dress like the women in my portraits, but when I asked why she couldn’t, she gestured at her body. She didn’t feel confident enough. I told her she deserved to embrace every part of herself, and that she would look absolutely stunning.
A few months later, she booked her session. She chose a beautiful red dress, and she wore it like she was born to.
Melosa had a story of her own. She was a rescue with a deep sway back, and at first, Katie wanted to hide it. Instead, she chose to photograph Melosa exactly as she was, history, strength, and all. Then we walked out into the tall grasses at golden hour, and everything glowed.
Melosa passed away on August 9, 2024, less than a year later. Today, these portraits are a memorial to their bond, and to the day they were both seen exactly as they were.
That is my favourite part of what I do. I get to show my clients what I see, and what everyone in their lives already loves about them. And I get to capture the bond they share with their horse, so that it can live on forever.
Katie, thank you for trusting me with your story, and with Melosa’s. 🤍
