Mr. and Mrs. Hoots posed for me on this saguaro cactus bloom. They did a superb job of raising 4 owlets this year, and they’ve had at least 2 Great Horned Owl owlets fledge their Arizona nest every year since I started photographing them in 2021!

The second photo has been a top seller since I took it a few years ago at the base of Arizona’s Superstition Mountains. I haven’t posted it since that day, and thought it deserved another look! It’s available in select sizes and mediums at TheJeremyJohnson.com and custom by DM.

This Red-tailed Hawk let me know whose territory I was encroaching on. I didn’t see a nest in the area, but with the way she was screaming at me above Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, it leads me to believe there’s something nearby she didn’t want me near!

Once in a Blue Moon! As the Great Horned Owl headed out to hunt under the full moon, the Harris’s Hawks flew off to spend the night quietly roosting in Arizona’s saguaros, mesquite, palo verde, and ironwood trees.

Golden Hour Glow- Man, that sunset lighting sure showed off her amazing plumage! This Red-tailed Hawk let me know whose territory I was encroaching on. I didn’t see a nest in the area, but with the way she was screaming at me above Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, it leads me to believe there’s something nearby she didn’t want me near!

I caught this Javelina eating my neighbors’ decorative cactus while leaving the neighborhood in our little slice of Arizona. AKA Jurassic Park

I caught this Gila monster finishing off a Gambel’s quail egg breakfast on the side of the trail. One of the only venomous lizards in the world, and the same species that helped inspire meds like Ozempic. Wild Arizona!

One year ago this week, “Hootie” the Great Horned Owl moved into our next-door neighbor’s home while they were away for the summer. Again, this week, the Owlets from that nest have moved into an area behind my home.

Great Horned Owl fledglings typically stick around with Mom and Dad for about 6 weeks on average until they are able to hunt on their own. By late summer, they’ll be able to go start a family of their own and find a lifelong mate.
