Every once in a while, I come across an old photo of one of the foster dogs I photographed and wonder where they ended up.

I don’t know what happened to this guy after his photos. Some of the dogs I’ve photographed found their forever homes, while others moved on to rescues better equipped for their specific needs or breeds. I like to think they all eventually landed exactly where they belonged.

Photographing foster dogs has always been one of the ways I can use what I do to help animals in our community.

An oldie but a goodie.

I still love this one. The foliage, the sweater perfectly complimenting the dog’s fur, and that sunlight peeking over the trees... I love this season.

And we’re getting very close to that time of year again.

I’m currently finalizing mini session dates, fall portraits, Christmas sets and the rest of the year lined up.

Side note: photography business gurus really, really want photographers to stop calling mini sessions “mini sessions.” We’re supposed to call them Limited Edition Sessions or something equally fancy.

I’ve tried. "Quick Takes" was a good effort.

But honestly? They’re minis.

They’re short and sweet. They’re perfect when you just need a few updated photos, and they’re also a really easy way to work with me for the first time and see if I’m the photographer you want to keep coming back to.

Because if you love your experience, there’s a pretty good chance I’m going to be talking to you about the Keepsake Collective for 2027.

Being a community-minded photographer is more than sponsorships and donating my time behind the camera. A big part of it, for me, is just paying attention to what’s going on in my community. One of the ways I get to do that is through events like Working Women’s Wednesday, presented by the Women's Resource Center in Alamance County.

This month’s speaker was Dr. John Jenkins with Cone Health, talking about school-based telehealth. It was fascinating. The ripple effect of a child going home not feeling well — losing instructional time, siblings going home too, teachers having to catch them up, parents losing income because they have to leave work, employers losing productivity — was something that really hadn’t occurred to me outside of my own realm of experience. A telehealth program in elementary schools can be part of a really valuable solution.

I love being able to support organizations in our community with my photography, whether that’s through sponsorships, event coverage, headshots, or other projects. And, of course, I love a good lunch. But I also really like getting to sit in the room and learn something about Alamance County that I probably wouldn’t have known otherwise.

Contrary to popular belief, everyone doesn't have to be looking at the camera.

Sometimes the strongest photo from the session is the one where everyone is looking at the same thing, even if we never see what it is. That little bit of curiosity is what draws us in.

One of my favorite parts of photographing for West Burlington Neighbors is getting to meet someone I probably never would have met otherwise.

We usually start by talking about the article. Before long, we're talking about family, childhood, career changes, and what they're working toward next.

Somewhere along the way, they stop feeling like a stranger. It feels more like I'm photographing a friend.

Whether someone leads a business, a nonprofit, or serves our community, my goal is always the same. I want them to look confident, approachable, and, most importantly, like themselves.

Everyone has a story to tell.

As we head into my busiest season of the year, it's time for a little digital housekeeping.

Beginning August 17, I'll be archiving older client galleries to make room for all of the fall families, seniors, Santa sessions, and holiday orders that will be filling them over the next few months.

If you still have an online gallery, now is a great time to:
• Download your images
• Save a backup to an external hard drive or cloud storage
• Order a 5x7 for Grandma
• Make sure your favorite memories are safely tucked away

One quick note for my Keepsake Collective families: your galleries stay online all year as part of your membership, so this doesn't apply to you.

If you're not sure whether your gallery is still active, feel free to send me a message and I'll be happy to check.

Every year around this time, I start getting the same question:

"When should I reach out about fall family portraits?"

And honestly, it's right now.

My fall portrait season runs from about mid-September through the first weekend of November. After that, it's a bit of a gamble. Around here, one good storm can strip most of the leaves off the trees overnight.

I'd much rather photograph your family while everything is still healthy and green. If the trees are still whispering summer where you're wearing sweaters, there's always a little editing magic I can do. What I can't do is put leaves back on the trees after they've fallen.

This year there are only nine Saturday evening sessions during my fall season, and two are already booked and another is Halloween.

If fall portraits are on your to-do list this year, this is just your friendly reminder not to wait until you see the leaves start turning. Reach out now so we can plan the perfect session.

Senior year is about more than one teenager.

It's about a family that's about to change.

One day, your oldest will head off to college, start a career, or move into a place of their own. Family dinners get a little less frequent. Finding a weekend when everyone is home gets a little harder. Before long, you're coordinating around college schedules, jobs, and eventually partners and grandchildren.

This season, right now, is the last chapter before all of that begins.

That's one of the reasons I always encourage families to think beyond senior portraits. Bring everyone along. Before we spend the rest of the session celebrating your senior, let's create one family portrait that captures this chapter exactly as it is.

And if your senior would rather not share the spotlight, I've got another option.

Book a Senior Signature Session, and I'll include a complimentary fall family mini session. Your senior gets a session that's all about them, and you'll still have one more family portrait before life starts carrying everyone in different directions.

Someday, you'll be glad you did.

Picture this...

Your little superhero is turning another year older.

So you swing by the studio for a quick birthday session. Maybe this year's all about Spider-Man. Next year it might be race cars, dinosaurs, princesses, or whatever has completely captured their imagination.

After a few laughs and a handful of portraits that actually feel like *them*, you grab a Happy Meal from across the street and spend the afternoon climbing, running, and exploring at Cate's Farm Park.

Birthday portraits don't have to be an all-day production or even the main event. Sometimes they're just one more fun stop in an already fun day.

That's one of my favorite things about the Keepsake Collective. It gives families a simple way to celebrate the little chapters that go by so quickly.

Parents usually remember everything that had to happen before the picture:
Getting everyone dressed.
Convincing someone to wear shoes.
Snacks.
Bribes.
Traffic.

Kids remember...
Playing in the leaves.
Laughing.
Being together.

That's one of my favorite things about family portraits. Years from now, nobody remembers how you got there. They just remember how it felt.
