Wild Horses Rescued After Snowstorm Near Mammoth Lakes

A firsthand account by Blake DeBock of Mono County and Eastern Sierra wild horses rescued near Mammoth Lakes after being trapped in deep snow. Covered by the Los Angeles Times, survivors were transported to Double Devil Corrals in Alturas, California.

The Time an Elk Bugled in My Face – Call of the Wild
Each year in the fall, the forest echoes with elk calls as males bugle to attract females and intimidate other bulls. The best place to experience this natural spectacle is in the great vastness of Yellowstone National Park, often referred to as the Serengeti of North America, where one has the incredible opportunity to observe the largest bull elk up close in their natural habitat. While hiking on a crisp fall morning along the Madison River, I watched in awe as this powerful bull proudly led his cows past me, stopping just to raise his head toward the sky and let out a resounding call nearly in my face—an awe-inspiring screeching, bone-chilling, and unmistakable call of the wild that echoed across the landscape. He then hurried his harem away and disappeared into the dense woods, leaving me standing alone beside the river to contemplate this incredible encounter.
Yellowstone is a stunning and remarkable place that consistently draws me back time and time again, year after year. It can be a very challenging location to capture great photographs, but when those rare opportunities present themselves, it is always wild, rugged, and raw. The greatest moments here are fleeting and one must spend a lot of time to be faced with the perfect moment. Artistically, there is still so much more I hope to accomplish here. There’s no place like it, offering such an array of great animals with the backdrop of misty thermal features, towering pines and expansive, great valleys that stretch endlessly before the viewer.

New Release: Sacred Azul – Descending into the cool cenote from the heat of the jungle, my wife and I arrived at the edge of the limestone opening and looked down into the depths of the sacred blue waters below. For the Maya, cenotes were spiritual thresholds between the physical world and the underworld. Formed in the limestone of the Yucatán, these natural underground reservoirs were considered sacred portals. I entered the cool water and moved into a thriving hidden ecosystem filled with fish, turtles, and even alligators. I dove deep into the cenote toward the lilies as they reached up toward the light at the surface, carefully swimming through the delicate stems of the lilies as they stretched upward. Beneath the cave walls, everything was quiet as the lilies gently swayed in the crystal waters. I descended on a single breath, positioning myself deep in the cenote with a custom-made underwater housing for my camera, and made the photograph on one breath. During these days of shooting the magic of Mexico, my wife and I chose to elope in one of these cenotes and were married in a private ceremony guided by a Mayan shaman. Being in these sacred waters gave the image a deeper meaning, tying it not only to the underworld revered by the Maya, but to one of the most personal moments of my life.

Many of you who have visited The Village Lodge this year may have noticed the new artwork throughout the property.

Over the past year, The Village Lodge has acquired 27 large-format works by Blake DeBock, a custom shot collection photographed for the lodge and now installed across public spaces. The installation includes four 8-foot panoramic centerpieces, along with additional 5-foot and 4-foot works placed throughout lobby areas, hallways, and shared spaces.

Having photographed the Sierra Nevada for much of his life and operated his fine art gallery just downstairs for several years, Blake approached this body of work with a clear intention: to create a cohesive Mammoth collection designed to live within the Village Lodge. Each image was developed with the scale, architecture, and atmosphere of the space in mind, drawing from Mammoth Mountain and the surrounding Eastern Sierra.

Pitched, photographed, produced, shipped, and professionally installed through DeBock Fine Art, with every stage executed by our team and infrastructure, the collection represents a level of control and cohesion rarely seen in hospitality installations.

The completed installation is a single-artist presence that now defines the visual identity of The Village Lodge within the beauty of Mammoth, elevating the guest experience for years to come.

In fine art photography, a limited edition is not a marketing term.
It reflects how an artist values rarity, authorship, and long-term integrity.

At DeBock Fine Art, every limited edition photograph is released as a finite body of work.
When an edition sells out, the image is retired permanently.

This is how true collectability is built within our limited editions.

Río de Sueños | Having spent years photographing in Patagonia, theres still images I uncover from my archives of dreamlands and mountain spires. Heres a river flowing from glaciers right against the base of Mt Fitz Roy. This was lost in the archives among hundreds of thousands of images, but these mornings are sealed in my memory and I still remember how I felt on this morning balancing on slippery rocks in the pre dawn glow and obsessing on the most minute details of the rivers flow and textures.
