Daniel Murray and I hiked up the Waimakariri River in Winter to reach a legendary mountain hut in a remote part of Arthur's Pass National Park in New Zealand. After 10 grueling hours we arrived in the dark, exhausted and cold. In this week's episode we find out if the juice was worth the squeeze. (Hint: it was).

This is part 3 of a 4 part series.

This was perhaps the most difficult shoot I've ever done. Photographing tonight's total solar eclipse over the Cavalleria Lighthouse in Spain. Not only was the sun extremely low in the sky, and hence very dark, but we fought rough seas and a moving boat to shoot this alignment. A huge technical challenge with ISO through the roof, and pushing my shutter speed to the absolute limit of what was possible to hand hold and stay sharp at 500mm. What an incredible sight and experience, and I'm happy to have been there to grab a few shots. A huge thanks to PhotoPills for organizing this spectacular experience. And also to my friends Albert Dros and Francesco Gola who were on different boats at different lighthouses fighting their own battles. And of course I can't forget Sharon Vanadia for crewing me and providing support during the shoot. Phew, can't wait for the next one!

Earlier this month I spent 6 days hiking a circuit through Picos de Europa National Park in Northern Spain. From the breathtaking highlands to the spectacular gorges, the park blew me away with its grandeur, scenic beauty, and sheer variety of landscapes. Here are eight images that capture a tiny fraction of my incredible experience over those 6 days.

Last month I had the good fortune of hiking the Fiordland section of the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks (at least as much as was possible up to the avalanche closure). It was a magical experience full of mystical forests, ever-changing weather, and views straight out of a fantasy novel. Here are some photos from my first day on the trail.

I made a vlog about the experience of hiking the track. To watch it check the link in my profile.

As always, no AI, no fakery, just Mother Nature at her absolute most stunning.

A few spectacular moments from my trip to New Zealand in October and November. A huge thanks to everyone who joined .nz and I for our photo tour through the South island to experience and photograph these amazing places.

As always, no AI, no composites, just Mother Nature being her beautiful self.

Photos from a magical 24 hours in Kings Canyon National Park here in California earlier this year. After waking up to a beautiful calm morning, I spent the entire day hiking in the clouds and the rain, heading to a place I'd never been before. The rain followed me, and I spent all night huddled in my tent. The next morning I awoke to thick gray clouds swirling in every direction. After a few hours, just as I was poised to pack up and leave, the skies broke open and the world became a fantasy.

Birthday Alert! For me, today marks 44 laps around that great big ball of fire in the sky. What a marvelously beautiful year it was, one that filled me to the brim with joy over and over. Here are a handful of my favorite moments of photography from the last 12 months.

1) Overlooking Bench Lake in Kings Canyon National Park after discovering this ridge view by accident, my birthday last year.
2) Once-in-a-lifetime sunrise conditions I saw in Kings Canyon last Tuesday. o_o
3) A spectacular glacial valley cutting through the mountains of northern Pakistan, April.
4) Finding the most perfect little waterfall in a random Sierra stream, August.
5) Aoraki / Mt Cook and lenticular clouds, taken during a drool-inducing helicopter flight in New Zealand, October.
6) The aurora borealis dancing over Mono Lake, October.
7) Finding one of the coolest formations I've encountered in the Death Valley sand dunes, January.
8) Intense pre-dawn alpenglow hits the Palisades, some of the highest peaks in the contiguous USA. July.
9) One of the fiercest sunsets I saw in 2025 erupting over the Chalfant Lakes in the John Muir Wilderness.
10) Fall color arriving Lone Pine and a stroll in the neighborhood found me next to these stunning cottonwoods, with Mt Whitney in the background. November.
11) Comet ATLAS-Tsuchinshan "colliding" with Mt Whitney. October.
12 Clearing storms reveal the massive fjords of Doubtful Sound, one of the most incredible places I've ever visited. November.
13) A nearly full moon setting over a snow-clad Mt Whitney at sunrise. March.
14) Another drool-inducing scenic flight in New Zealand, this time over Fiordland National Park, possibly the most beautiful place on the planet. October.
15) After getting a very late start climbing, I found myself at the summit of University Peak (13,500') just as the sun was setting. It was a huge PITA climbing down in the dark, but worth it for this view. July.
16) A glorious sunrise unfolding over my favorite place in the world: the Kings Canyon backcountry.
17) Your new best friend. (I wish).

Last year is going to be hard to beat, but looking at the calendar for my 44th year, I think it could be a serious contender.

On a trip in July 2022 I hiked more than 50 miles solo through the spectacular Kings Canyon National Park wilderness. Taking place over 5 days, this trek was one of the best I've ever done, with jaw-dropping scenery and dramatic thunderstorms every day, leading to breathtaking conditions for photography. It was also one of the most physically demanding trips I've done, with 7,000 ft of ascent on the first day alone, then thousands more in the following days, mostly off trail. But the mental, physical, emotional, and photographic rewards made it all worth it.

Here are a few photos from the first 24 hours of this trip. Want to see a video of the adventure plus more photos? Check out the latest vlog on my website:

Why do I say that New Zealand is the greatest landscape photography destination on the planet? Because there's nowhere else in the world you can experience scenery this beautiful, this varied, this easy to get to, this close together, and under this quality of light as New Zealand.

Here are 15 photos I took entirely within the 11 days of my 2024 New Zealand photo tour. And this is barely scratching the surface of what we saw.
nz and will be launching our 2025 New Zealand photo tours soon. You can email me at [email protected] to be added to the priority announcement list.

Two shots from yesterday in Lone Pine. Today I'm feeling endlessly thankful for a life full of mornings like this, wonderful friends around the world, family nearby, and many adventures to come in the years ahead.
