This was an astonishing capture late in December, I am blessed, I am grateful, it was an amazing moment. The day was an extra-day for my daughter, Sabrina, the road was closed to Medford, for her plane ride back to Chicago in the afternoon. Late that rainy day we decided to revisit this nearby location next to Crescent City. The light seemed to be from a supernatural being, pouring rail all the afternoon, but all lit by the sun and foggy at the same time, and wherever one looked about. Even though the camera and I were under an umbrella, after about nine or ten shots, we were both soaked. I wondered did I get anything, was the camera level, what about those trees on sides? All the usual things that I ponder after an important shot, but this time there was NO chance to return. Was it any good? I must admit, I forgot about that moment, until I came upon this sequence editing in Lightroom. Only one image was useable, this capture required almost no work in Lightroom, I was blown away by what I felt looking at the image, the rain, the sun, the FEELING of being there. I have been working in Lightroom since 2007, and never have I so taken, so moved by my first glance at a capture. And I still feel it. One of the most special moments in a long career...

And a belated New Years! It has been tough getting back in the swing of things!!!

Good Afternoon to all of my clients!

The Autumn colors are almost finished in 2024, in the Eastern Sierra. Last fall in 2023 was far extensive and had longer lasting color, but in many places, 2024 was just as good, and here and there even better. Rock Creek had some amazing colorful foliage lasting for over a month, and it was right on the road! The capture here at Millpond is a good example, maybe I have always missed it before, but the colors in the cottonwoods, and Mount Humphreys have been fantastic.

These captures, “Winter Dawn over Mount Tom”, are one the best in my portfolio, maybe a career photograph.

But the back-story is fascinating, I awoke at about 2:30AM, things outside looked good. The alarm goes off at 6AM, right in the middle of an unnerving dream. The dream was quite scary, and now fully alive in my consciousness. I lost my then six-year-old daughter in a fancy shopping center, and at the end of the dream at 6AM, she is whispering, “I will be back”. Out of the blue, the dream was gone.

It took a few minutes to shake off the unsettled dream, and then I was getting ready for the drive. Coffee first! I drove to my selected location and took than a few minutes to pay respects to one of my mentors, Galen Rowell. This was a perfect subject for him. Thank you! I planned to take this concept further, using my mature knowledge of mindful photography, and all the wonderful technological advances of the last 20 years since the awful plane crash here in Bishop.

Being mindful, “when it counts” has become quite easy for me lately, I have been shooting the better part of fifty years.

I considered various compositions and made sure to shoot all of them. The incredible light lasted about twenty minutes; in this case the better images were made near the end of this period.

“Only the heart can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye - Antoine de Saint-Exupery”
With my complete respect to Antoine de Saint-Exupery, these words have been my mantra for my lifetime. But now after all these years, decades, really a career of learning the craft of photography, I can perceive what is invisible to the eye, what the heart can see, and present those passions out into the world. I have been ruminating about our travels the past few months, it could have been the ultimate photography trip. The journey up north to the Olympics back in August, the miles traveled to the Canadian Rockies in September, the astonishing Autumn color of Lake Superior in October, and the journey back through southern Missouri and Colorado in November. I could be pondering this odyssey for months. I have posted three of the best from the last month here, but please check again, it’s a slow process to get it to the WEB.
November 15 is the beginning of my annual Black Friday Sale. Mark your calendar! The sale will be on through midnight of December 4. Details to follow in a few days!

I have been stalling writing this post! Our odyssey has been delightful, and the autumn colors have been past outrageous the past few weeks. We are in Pictured Rock National Lakeshore in Michigan now; the maples and birch have peaked during our visit!
Looking back two weeks or so ago, here are three images from the famous Glacier Park in Montana, during our time there, the colors came into their best over Logan Pass, and we were able drive the road on the last day it was open in 2022. It was a cold cloudy day to start, buy as we slowly drove to the top, the peaks popped out one by one. I was shooting madly at every turn out, but it turned out my vision was clearer lower down, even with the majestic mountains towering over the slow highway. I have included a wonderful aspen image done right on the road, another from down on Flathead River, and my favorite of the trip, a late dusk shot of Lake McDonald and the crest of the Rockies. We wound being “stuck” in Glacier for a week. And it was wonderful! A quote from Headspace is the key to my success on the last day. “If you just grabbed your phone out of boredom, try looking up and inward and notice the world around you instead.” The capture at Lake McDonald was brewing for few days in the right side of my brains!
I hope you have a wonderful experience on your visit!

We are about a month into our Autumn 2022 odyssey. We have visited many places so far, the Olympics, the San Juan Islands, Mount Baker, and incredible Canadian Rockies. Too many? I had not really realized how much time is spent organizing your camp, the laundry and cooking! It seems like there has not been enough for shooting, my passion later in life, or maybe there has been way too much time? I’m relaxing at West Glacier in Montana now and thinking of all the experiences of the past month. Here are three images from the last weeks.
The image above is the Milky Way and Moraine Lake in Banff National Park. Of all my 50 plus years in the High Sierra, Moraine Lake is at the top of the list rivaling Golden Bear Lake in Kings Canyon and Wales Lake is Sequoia National Park. There is an image to be posted later, captured mid-day on a cloudy noon morning that is amazing too. But here with darkness approaching all my preparation was perfect! I arrived a bit late, and with a workshop already setup in my chosen location. It is always a bit unnerving; I like to shoot alone. Well OK, but then my chosen camera, and older Canon 6D refused to make a capture. I was sure that I needed a wider lens than a 24mm, but that was not to be, my superb Sony IV was ready too. It turned out that scene was perfect for a 24mm. The newer SONY 24-70 is just incredible, the lends is amazing at 24mm and set to a wide-open f2.8! It is easy to focus the Milky Way shooting too. I relaxed and waited for my chosen time!

Margaret and I are about ten days into our fall journey into the Pacific Northwest, the Canadian Rockies and then eventually onto the Upper Michigan Peninsula and fall splendor on Wisconsin. We are camped at the beautiful Cape Flattery in the northwest point of Washington state. There was beautiful weather to Crater Lake and beyond, but it has been wet and rainy in the Olympics. It’s a perfect time photographing but hard and a bit unfriendly for us to camp, since we are natives from the Sierra Nevada at home.
The process of finding this image, walking upon the oceanfront logs, and looking for the just the right spot location was still ok for my very used knees, and I KNEW IT WAS CORRECT as I caught the Arch in the corner of my eye. I have been using my camera for so long, I was SURE. The correct camera settings automatically were in the camera, a few seconds spent deciding where to zoom, and then I was fully committed to the right-side of my brain to refine the composition, and then waiting a few minutes for the correct sunspot to below the arch. It all came together!
I felt much excitement back at my computer in LightRoom, the capture was processing in minutes, just like in the field. For me it was a once-in-lifetime moment.

All the best,
Margaret and Vern

Moving on in Life...

It’s been 40 years since I opened my first gallery in the Eastern Sierra – 40 fantastic years making creative captures in the exciting world of photography - starting with the older Nikon cameras, moving along to large-format for many years, and these days working with the incredible digital world of Sony. The best part of each year has been the personal interaction with each and every client. THANK YOU!
My creative juices are stronger than ever and the time has come to close my Mammoth gallery. Shuttering the gallery July 31, we will embark on a several-month-long sojourn beginning mid-August, exploring the farther reaches of our beautiful country – a time to grow and learn about ourselves and about our fragile planet.
The Internet has changed the world of photography for the better, making it possible to personally be in touch with all of my clients from the road, and I’ll continue to post images from our little Casita Travel Trailer office on wheels. And you can feel free to contact us while we’re on the road. When we return, I’ll be in business with a smaller office in Town and the WEB.
But for now, there are a few wonderful images on the wall here in the Gallery. EVERYTHING in the Gallery is 50% off until the end of July. These images may be free with a full priced purchase.

Please call, text, or be touch over the web. The webpage does NOT show sale pricing.
