I'm proud to support the Los Angeles Center of Photography Summer Auction, now live.

LACP has long been an important part of the photography community, championing photographers through exhibitions, education, and opportunities to connect and grow.

The auction features some wonderful, one-of-a-kind experiences, with proceeds helping support LACP's mission. If you're interested, take a look and place a bid before the auction closes on August 4.

Smartphones changed the face of photography. Photography has continually evolved since the age of big-box cameras that only a few could afford. The Kodak Brownie was one of the first cameras introduced that made photography available and accessible to everyone. Even at this major milestone in the evolution of photography, the expense of taking photos was a factor for the majority. Kodak made the camera and film more affordable, yet every click of the shutter carries an expense in the cost of film and in development.

It is accepted folklore, history, or rumor that Punk Rock emerged as a named genre, often called first wave punk, in the mid-1970s. The Lower East Side in New York City and a bar/club called CBGB & OMFUG are often hailed as the birthplace of Punk Rock. As a defined genre by those who lived it, that is the gospel truth. Like an invasive species, the seeds were planted and dispersed throughout the world.

When I needed a website in the early 2000s, my studio manager recommended a web developer, Jennifer Precious Finch (). Marlene said she was cool, and the bass player for the band L7. Precious, as she is known to her friends, was creative and talented on every level, musically and visually. She was real, so real, and so down to earth. I was never a schmoozer, probably to my detriment, but Precious was always cool to be around.

When my wife Elizabeth closed up shop in Brooklyn and moved to LA, she said she was excited to be able to spend more time with her best friend, a woman named Precious. I was like, Precious, Jennifer? I was surprised; what a coincidence. Although there are no real coincidences in life.

Last year in January (25), Precious called me and needed to grab something at our place. We were talking; I had mentioned that Elizabeth was on a 6-week shoot in Bangkok and I really, really missed her. I was worried about my wife, who was getting lonely there and was physically exhausted. I tried to convince her to come home early for her 40th birthday, but she had two more shoots scheduled and could not.

Precious just looked at me and said, “You have to go; you have to surprise her, and I am buying you a ticket!" I was kind of shocked since I was not expecting it, but seized the opportunity. Surprising Elizabeth was the best thing I have ever done in my life. I still think about it, and will always remember Precious for it. Jumping headfirst off the cliff, taking the chance, was very Precious, and she encouraged her friend to be bold also.

For the past few years, on my wife’s birthday (a different birthday), Precious and I would hold hands and give Elizabeth a cake together. She was one of a kind, just filled with love. I always had a tear in my eye in the room because the care we all had for each other was palpable.

Since February, we have been rooting for her. Elizabeth was a major support, but this past week she took a turn for the worse. Thursday night, Elizabeth and I got to hold her hand and say our goodbyes, in a hospital room filled with at least 20 people. She was well loved. Saturday afternoon we got the news, though, that she had succumbed to her illness. It’s been a long 5 days for Elizabeth and me; we are both exhausted. Seeing the love that so many people had for her was truly awe-inspiring. She touched many hearts.

We will miss you, Precious, and we will take care of Jack.

I love this poem by Maya Angelou, especially during these incredibly challenging times. Here is an abridged version that continues to resonate with me:

Human Family

I note the obvious differences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy.

Some declare their lives are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they really live
the real reality.

The variety of our skin tones
can confuse, bemuse, delight,
brown and pink and beige and purple, tan and blue and white.

I note the obvious differences between each sort and type,
but we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.

We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike."

Peace.

Is being a photographer a learned skill or intuitive? Is it more than buying an expensive, automatic camera? How do photographers train their eyes to capture the world around them in a split second? As in every professional skill, there are exercises professionals use to see light, composition, and moments differently.

The camera is only part of the equation. Read the full story on the blog: https://shorturl.at/kfiUc

On Saturday afternoons in the mid-1970s, deep inside an MIT building, something was happening that you couldn’t hear anywhere else. There were no playlists, no streaming services, and no music blogs telling you what mattered. Just a small, 10-watt radio station and a DJ playing records that nobody else would touch.

“This was the only place… the only place you could hear this music,” Oedipus recalls.

Long before punk had a global identity, before it had mainstream coverage, and before most people even knew what to call it, it had a foothold in Boston. At the center of it all was radio.

I’m looking to sell one of my businesses, ProStorage https://getprostorage.com/, as I simplify my focus a bit this year.

Pro Storage is a profitable niche company in the photography/tech space with mid-5 figures in inventory, several patents, and a solid foundation already in place.

If this sounds like something you’d want to explore, send me a message.
