The Central Park SummerStage concert series is a longstanding New York institution. Its world-class programming brings New Yorkers and tourists together through their love of music and culture that spans genres. We’ve been honored to have been a part of it since the early 1990s by presenting an annual show for thousands of attendees. We’ve managed to put together eclectic line ups in partnership with the SummerStage team over the years, including artists like Janelle Monae, Femi Kuti, Roy Ayers, Q-Tip, Raphael Saadiq, Little Dragon, Shuggie Otis, Gilles Peterson, and Hiatus Kaiyote, to name just a few.

Let’s take a second to talk about Uno Melodic Records, Roy Ayers’ independent label that housed his own recordings and a roster of artists such as Sylvia Striplin, Eighties Ladies, Rick Holmes, Ethel Beatty and more, which ran from 1980 to 1983. While this is a short lived scope in the lengthy career of Roy Ayers, this was a period that was sonically important and impactful. This was when Roy Ayers really began to shift the slider away from his traditional jazz background and dove deeply into of a fusion of disco and funk, which was also the budding of house and electronic music. Not all jazz musicians made these transitions, and some of those who didn’t ridiculed those who did. It was the legendary status of those like Miles, Herbie, and Quincy that encouraged others to move forward in realms of experimentation, and overall, the ones who evolved their sounds are remembered fondly, Roy Ayers being one of many.

While the early/mid 1970s of Roy Ayers is sampled heavily amongst Hip Hop, it is this period that is seen fondly amongst fans of house and neo soul.

Yesterday’s post reference Gerald Wilson and his connnection to Ndugu Chancler and Roy Ayers. Today we are highlighting this beautiful work from artist Ian Johnson (), inspired by the famed photograph of Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and Gerald Wilson by Jim Marshall. This piece is one of many in the collection of Johnson’s, who’s work has paid homage to some of the greatest names in jazz.

It’s never not a bad time to pay homage to the great Patrice Rushen () friend of Roy Ayers and fellow LA-born music legend. (1st slide photo: , slides 2-10 & words by )

Patrice Rushen is incredibly talented and has crafted a marvelous career in the music business. She is a Grammy-nominated artist, a singer, a multi-instrumentalist, a producer, an arranger, a composer, a songwriter, a music director, and a professor (currently the Chair of the Popular Music Program at USC Thornton School of Music). One of my earliest memories of seeing Patrice Rushen is the cover of the 1982 “Straight from the Heart” album, with the beautiful braids and beads hairstyle.
From what I recall in a Questlove Supreme interview with Patrice Rushen, she started playing piano as a child and was a bit of a child prodigy. Throughout her youth she continued to play and learn more about music and this led to her playing on sessions while in high school. While she is often remembered for her 1982 hit, “Forget Me Nots” (which was sampled by Will Smith for 1997’s “Men In Black”), her career is much more dynamic. Remember: Black people are dynamic.
Rushen’s solo discography began with jazz and I love her playing. I knew her R&B and funk music (“Haven’t You Heard”, “Remind Me” and more) before I knew her jazz presence. I found that out from the 1976 album “Heritage” by Eddie Henderson. I love the keys on the album and looked at the credits & boom, Patrice Rushen on keys with a songwriting credit for the track, “Kudu”. Throughout her career, Rushen has played with some incredibly talented musicians, more than I can list in this space. Do ya googles. She is also the first woman to be the musical director for the Grammys; she held this position for the 46th - 48th award shows (2004 - 2006). She has also been the musical director for the Emmys and Peoples Choice Awards. She was the musical director for Janet Jackson’s 1994 “janet” world tour.

Patrice Rushen, a shining example of Black Excellence!
