Hummingbird moths! I saw these fascinating insects at my brother and sister-in-law’s place. They are so unusual for insects. Their wings are almost transparent, so you can actually see the flowers right through them.

Molting cardinal. Cardinals undergo their annual molt after breeding season, generally in late summer into early fall. Occasionally they molt the head feathers all at once rather than gradually, producing this bizarre bald-headed appearance. They can look terrible for a short period and still be perfectly health.

What’s wrong with this blue jay? Bad hair day?

It appears to be molting. Blue jays can lose many or even nearly all of their head feathers at once during their late-summer molt. That produces that rather alarming bald, scruffy looking head while the rest of the bird looks perfectly normal.
In a few weeks, it should have its handsome blue crest back.
