Photos of the Hoover Dam and one of the train tunnels that were used in building the dam.

I hiked on the train tunnel trail to reach the Hoover Dam. I wasn't sure how the trail was going to end. I didn't know if I was going to be at the dam or simply have a view of it at the end of the trail.

It was an interesting experience to hike a mostly desolate trail to then go through an opening in the canyon and then onto the top of a 4-storied parking garage. To my right was the bridge crossing the Colorado River, and to my left was the massive Hoover Dam. Both are impressive feats of engineering.

In the second photo, you can see that the water used to reach all the way up the white line in the canyon. El Nino will hopefully bring much needed precipitation to the southwest, but it won't be enough to stop the reservoirs from going dry at the current rate of water demand. State and federal level action will be needed to slow the rate of use of the most precious resource of the desert.

Hemenway Park in Boulder City, NV, has a local desert bighorn sheep herd that likes to hang out in the grass. They were mostly in the shade under a tree. I sat down at a distance and shot images with my telephoto lens. The first image is a big horn that walked directly towards me. I sat still, and it walked around me just ten feet away.

Two more images from Spooky Canyon, AZ. I took a lot of images there, so it's difficult to choose a favorite. The only other slot canyon I've shot is Sara's Crack in Lake Havasu City. I've been making a list of slot canyons I want to visit.

A surreal scene in the desert. This building had hardly any standing walls. Some nearby buildings were also in a state of disrepair. Many of the walls that remain are covered in graffiti. The water tower has the name of the nearby town of "Parker," but the letters have greatly faded.
