Seeing Eye to Eye

These two goats were seeing eye to eye on a beautiful spring morning.

The Goats of Roan series began with the Baa-tany Goat Project. The goats spent summers alongside the Appalachian Trail at elevations of 5,700’-5800’ on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, grazing on the balds of the Roan Mountain Highlands. The rest of the year they lived on their farm in beautiful Shady Valley, Tennessee.

I spent time with them on their Shady Valley farm where they grazed on a grass-covered steeply sloped field with woods as a backdrop. Each morning they would graze in the field and then as the temperature rose would head into the woods.

Crossing The Palmdale Trestle

US Sugar No. 148 is pulling a passenger consist over the wooden trestle near Palmdale FL.

U.S. Sugar 148, formerly Florida East Coast 148, is a 4-6-2 steam locomotive built in April 1920 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Richmond, Virginia, originally for the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC). It hauled passenger and freight trains on the FEC's Overseas Railroad to Key West, Florida until the line was destroyed by a hurricane in 1935. The locomotive was sold in 1952 to U.S. Sugar Corporation (USSC) to haul sugarcane trains in Clewiston, Florida.

During the 1970s, No. 148 was sold again to New Jersey, where it served excursion service on the Black River and Western (BRW) and Morristown and Erie (ME) railroads. Between 1983 and 2005, the locomotive was sold multiple times to various owners in Connecticut, Michigan, and Colorado who have attempted to restore No. 148 to operation but never succeeded.

In late 2016, U.S. Sugar reacquired the No. 148 locomotive and restored it to operating condition by 2020 for use in excursion service on their South Central Florida Express short line railroad as part of their heritage tourist passenger train named the Sugar Express, touring visitors all around the Lake Okeechobee counties.

These two sheep looked like they were playing Hide N’ Seek. They had gone into the historic barn at the Rocky Mount Historic Site in Piney Flats TN and were peering out through the logs at the rest of the herd.

The Cotswold are a very old breed of sheep that originated about 2,000 years ago on the Cotswold hilltops of the Southern Midlands region of England. They are thought to be descended from long wool sheep introduced in England by the Romans in the first century A.D.

Christopher Dunn was the first to introduce the Cotswold sheep to America in 1832. Though uncommon today, in 1879 they were the most popular breed in America with over 760,000 registered.

Their numbers dwindled after the introduction of the Merino sheep which had superior fleece and quick maturing lambs. By 1993 there were less than 400 registered Cotswold lambs.

Thanks to the American Livestock Breeders Conservancy and other groups, Cotswolds have been removed from the "rare breed list" and are enjoying popularity among spinners. The Cotswold can yield 15 pounds of wool per shearing, with fibers up to 12 inches long.

RGS No. 20 is a T-19 class 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" type narrow gauge steam locomotive built by the Schenectady Locomotive Works in April 1899 for the Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad.

After the F&CC went bankrupt in 1915, she was sold to the Rio Grande Southern Railroad Company (RGS). In 1952, as the RGS was ending, the locomotive was sold to the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club and later donated to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado. Starting in 2006 she underwent a 14-year $1.5 million dollar restoration.

Beneath the Needle Mountains

On a beautiful Fall day, No. 473 pulls freight beneath the Needle Mountains.

473 was one of ten K-28 locomotives built by the American Locomotive Works in Schenectady, New York in 1923. All ten engines which were called the Sport Models and were sold to the Rio Grande Railroad.

Light Through Yonder Window

This image was made in the barn at Mountain Dream Alpacas in Waynesville NC.

Alpacas are sociable, adorable, gentle, soft, and curious. There are no wild alpacas, and they are mainly raised for their soft wool. Alpaca fur is a prized fiber for artisans and crafters. The fur is very soft and does not retain water. It is also very durable and is the second strongest animal fiber.

Alpacas come in 22 colors, from a true, blue-black through browns and tans to white.
