In honor of the first notable snowfall of the season and the snowliage, I’d like to present images I have never released before of photographing the snowliage phenomenon. Unfortunately I am not in New York right now to documents what will probably be beautiful tomorrow. So this is from 2024. Enjoy!

The Adirondacks have so much more to offer than the views from their summits. In between photographing those landscapes, I love exploring the quieter, lesser-seen corners of the wilderness—places most people will never have the opportunity to experience for themselves.

I was wandering through a stretch of forest I had never explored before, well off the beaten path, when I rounded a corner and stumbled upon these incredible little scenes of color and light. It almost felt as though they had been waiting there all along, just for someone to notice them.

I’ve been reaching for the telephoto more this fall, looking for smaller scenes instead of always trying to fit the whole landscape into the frame. This tree was one of those moments. Nothing I was searching for, just a patch of color and light that suddenly stood out. I think that’s been my favorite part of photographing this season: learning to notice more.

Tried my best at the stars last night. Didn’t really plan well but at least I got out there. The first image of the tree is actually completely natural color. This tree is very bright yellow in the daylight, however there was also a street light not far away casting more yellow light onto this tree. Hard photo to work with but I liked the composition mostly.

A magical morning in the Adirondacks like no other. I was so blessed by these conditions (9/30). Here’s the story if you want to read.
Story: The night before this morning, I had noticed from multiple sources that the major summits of the High Peaks were above the clouds. So, I was determined to summit Algonquin to capture this. Upon waking up at 4:30 AM, I realized that the cloud system had dramatically changed. I proceeded to change my plan four times in the course of an hour trying to figure out where to go and ultimately I settled with this Mountain View. I had been many times but I had not been up for sunrise. Before making the choice to going up here, I said to myself “Jonathan, being at the right place at the right time is never on purpose. It’s always an accident. So you need to just make up your mind and trust the process“.

The clouds finally gave way to heaven on earth. The conditions this week have been certainly challenging, but that makes me even more determined to find the beauty in the gray.

Hey guys, I haven’t posted much from the Adirondacks in a while, but I wanted to share a little bit from my past two weeks up there.

A big purpose of this trip was having the privilege of teaching photography for Northwood School students during their LEAP week. We spent the week traveling to different places around the Adirondacks, talking through how to see light, how to compose a scene, how to use the camera with intention, and how to look for both the big landscape and the smaller abstract details that are easy to miss.

It was honestly such a blessing to work with them. I loved seeing them get excited about being outside, exploring new places, and starting to notice the landscape in a different way. There is something really special about watching students walk into the wilderness with a camera and begin to see that photography is not just about taking a picture of something pretty, but about learning how to see.

I wanted to share a few photos from the week that stood out to me personally. Some are simple, some are quiet, but they all feel connected to what made this trip meaningful.
