Unpopular opinion: matching outfits are overrated… matching energy is what actually makes a photo unforgettable.

Four completely different personalities. Four completely different styles. One frame that somehow works because nobody tried to become someone else.

One showed up looking like she walked off a runway. Another brought major boho vibes. Someone leaned into dramatic editorial. Someone else kept it soft with a little edge. On paper, none of it should have gone together.

But that’s exactly why it did.

I think we spend way too much time trying to make everyone coordinate when the real magic happens the moment people stop blending in and start owning who they are. That’s when a photograph starts feeling like a cast instead of a lineup.

As a photographer, I’m far less interested in perfectly matching wardrobes than I am in creating a group dynamic where every person has room to shine. Give me personality over perfection every single time.

The best photos almost never start with, “Okay… smile.”

This one started with everyone figuring out where to stand, laughing because someone couldn’t decide what to do with their hands, and me reminding them that they didn’t need to “model.” They just needed to be themselves.

That’s my favorite part of every session.

Honestly, sessions like this are a reminder of why I love what I do. We were all on the same wavelength, so there wasn’t much coaching involved. We’d chat for a minute, I’d make a small adjustment here and there, and then everyone would slip right back into the moment. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like friends creating something together, and I think that’s exactly why these images feel so genuine.

If you’ve been putting off a session because you think you’re “not photogenic,” I’d love the chance to prove you wrong.

“The best editorial portraits don’t happen because you know how to pose. They happen because you know how to feel.”

One of the questions I hear most is, “What should I wear for an editorial photo session?” The answer is simple: wear pieces that tell a story. Think texture, movement, tailored silhouettes, and colors that complement one another instead of matching perfectly. The goal isn’t to wear a costume... it’s to create a cinematic scene that feels timeless.

People also ask, “What happens during an editorial session?” You don’t have to arrive knowing what to do. I guide every pose, every expression, and every movement. Rather than stiff smiles, we create natural interactions that feel like they’re pulled from the pages of a magazine or the frame of a movie.

And if you’ve ever wondered, “How do I pose for photos?” The secret is that posing isn’t about memorizing angles. It’s about connection. A glance, a touch, a shift in posture, or simply reacting to the person beside you often creates the most compelling images.

Three people. Three completely different aesthetics. Three different stories.

Same backdrop. Same light. Same space.

One stepped into the frame wrapped in elegance and tradition. One brought quiet power and undeniable presence. One showed up playful, bold, and completely unapologetic.

That’s the thing about photography people often miss: the magic isn’t in the set, the wardrobe, or even the lighting. It’s in what happens when someone gives themselves permission to be seen.

At Shutterfest, these three portraits became a reminder that style isn’t about fitting a mold. It’s about owning your version of it.

I photograph people because somewhere along the way, most of us learned to focus on everything we think needs fixing instead of everything that’s already remarkable.

The truth is, empowerment doesn’t always look like a dramatic transformation. Sometimes it looks like standing in front of a camera, taking up space without apology, and seeing yourself through a different lens for the first time.

Whether it’s a tailored suit, bare skin, a favorite dress, or simply the courage to show up as you are, my job isn’t to create beauty. It’s to reveal it. The strength. The vulnerability. The presence that’s been there all along.

That’s why I do this.

Not for perfect photos. For those moments when someone looks at an image and says, “I had no idea that was me.”

And if you’ve ever wondered what it would feel like to see yourself that way, maybe it’s time we created something together.

Some people call this “extra” like it is supposed to be an insult. But if dressing up and letting yourself feel beautiful for a night is considered too much… maybe the problem is how little the world expects people to express themselves anymore.

The glow, the architecture, the softness of this dress mixed with that almost haunting mood… this felt less like a photoshoot and more like a scene from a film nobody was supposed to interrupt.

And that is the part people forget. Self-expression is not vanity. It is identity with better lighting.

This little man showed up dressed like he had a studio contract in 1947 and absolutely carried himself like the main character. One minute he was giving “tiny Hollywood director yelling ACTION,” the next he looked completely over everybody on set like a burned-out celebrity avoiding paparazzi. Honestly… iconic behavior.

If your kid has big energy, weird little quirks, dramatic opinions, or a full-blown imagination… lean into it. Those are the photos that actually matter years from now.
