Scott Burchard Photography

Scott Burchard Photography I am a photographer in Jacksonville Florida. Raised in the picturesque state of Montana, my passion for photography ignited at a young age.

This enthusiasm for capturing the world through the lens followed me throughout my Navy career and continues to be a central part of my life today. Since 1995, I have made Jacksonville, with its breathtaking beaches and vibrant ocean life, my home. The ocean's allure and the coastal lifestyle have only deepened my love for the art of photography. From serene sunsets to dynamic waves, the beach off

ers a stunning backdrop for my work. While I cherish all forms of photography, my true passion lies in capturing events, family gatherings, and sports moments. There is a unique joy in freezing these fleeting memories, preserving the emotions and stories they convey. Whether it's a child's laughter, a triumphant victory, or a heartfelt embrace, my aim is to encapsulate these moments in a way that they can be cherished forever. Photography is not just a hobby; it is a vital part of my identity. It allows me to connect with people, share their joy, and document the beauty of life in all its forms. Each photograph is a testament to the moments that define our lives, and I am honored to be the one behind the lens, capturing these memories.

I was fortunate that this Copperhead didn’t strike me in the face or neck. While hiking in Pocahontas State Park VA with a friend, we came across a fallen tree trunk that was decaying and hollow through the center. I commented that it looked like the perfect place to find a snake.

As I bent over to look down into the hollow log, I paused and carefully scanned everything I could see. Not spotting anything, I stood back up and immediately noticed a snake poised to strike. When I realized where it was, it dawned on me that my face had been only about six inches away moments earlier.

Fortunately, this species is not known for being overly aggressive unless it feels threatened or is defending itself. I definitely used up a “get out of jail free” card that day.

The experience was a good reminder that even when you think you’re being careful, wildlife can be much closer than you realize. I’ll certainly be a little more cautious on future hikes.

Osprey are fish-hunters, and they have many unique adaptations to make them very good at what they do. Unlike other fish-eating birds of prey, Osprey can dive feet-first all the way into the water, getting soaked from head to talon, and still fly away with their meal. As in most of coastal Florida, St. Andrews State Park is home to alligators. This was one of two juvenile alligators I saw while camping. You have to be especially cautious around juveniles, as the mother is usually nearby—which we saw later. Friends of St. Andrews State Park, Inc.

I had the chance to witness a "David and Goliath" moment: Red-winged blackbirds are intensely protective of their nesting grounds and attack potential predators, including eagles. Bald eagles usually tolerate this harassment, appearing irritated before simply flying away to escape the pestering blackbirds. Friends of St. Andrews State Park, Inc.
