I was fortunate that this Copperhead didn’t strike me in the face or neck. While hiking in Pocahontas State Park VA with a friend, we came across a fallen tree trunk that was decaying and hollow through the center. I commented that it looked like the perfect place to find a snake.
As I bent over to look down into the hollow log, I paused and carefully scanned everything I could see. Not spotting anything, I stood back up and immediately noticed a snake poised to strike. When I realized where it was, it dawned on me that my face had been only about six inches away moments earlier.
Fortunately, this species is not known for being overly aggressive unless it feels threatened or is defending itself. I definitely used up a “get out of jail free” card that day.
The experience was a good reminder that even when you think you’re being careful, wildlife can be much closer than you realize. I’ll certainly be a little more cautious on future hikes.
