They're not really "BLUE!" 😳
🤯🐦The most mind-blowing fact about bluebirds is that they don’t actually have blue pigment.
Their feathers contain microscopic air pockets and melanin crystals that act like tiny prisms. When sunlight hits the feather, these structures scatter the shorter blue wavelengths of light and direct them outward to your eyes, while absorbing the other colors.
If you were to take a red cardinal feather and grind it up, the powder would still be red because of its chemical carotenoid pigment. If you ground up a bluebird feather, the powder would look dull brown or black because the light-scattering physical structure was destroyed.
