⚡️ Spring Thunderstorm, Wind, Torrential Rain, Rainbows, and Sunset in the Columbia River Gorge - May 28, 2026 ‼️

Another action packed Spring thunderstorm in the Gorge! I’m loving it! 🙌
This one arrived right at sunset which made for some very dramatic light and clouds that felt otherworldly and surreal.
It was raining buckets of torrential rain with powerful wind which made photos very difficult. Thankfully my camera did not get blown over again, but both cameras stopped working from being absolutely soaking wet. A dry towel helped revive them, but they were still malfunctioning on & off. I was soaked to the bone as well. This storm chasing photography stuff is not for the faint of heart 😅
I missed capturing any lightning at sunset but was able to capture a few strikes later when it was dark.
Enjoy some images from this evening’s power and beauty on full display 🙌

Many thanks for following along, sharing, and supporting my work. Love to capture and share the beauty 🙏

It’s Mount Saint Helens eruption remembrance day! 46 years ago on May 18th, 1980 more than 1,300 feet blasted off the top of the volcano causing the largest landslide in Earth's recorded history. Triggered by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake, the entire north face of the volcano collapsed, sending a staggering 2.8 cubic kilometers (about 1 billion dump truck loads) of rock, soil, and glacial ice tumbling down at speeds up to 150 miles per hour. The blast traveled over 300 miles per hour and scorched 230 square miles of forest in a matter of minutes. Within 15 minutes, a vertical plume of volcanic ash rose over 80,000 feet high. The volcanic ash cloud drifted east across the United States in 3 days and encircled Earth in 15 days. Incredible power of nature! 🤯 🙌
Many of these facts from the USGS: https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/103/

I don’t have many photos of Mt Saint Helens, only a handful from a distance but wanted to share a few from over the years. More info in captions 👍

Tonight on May 17th the Moon is a razor-thin Waxing Crescent, with just about 1% of its surface illuminated by the Sun. The Moon is in its orbital perigee about 226,000 miles from Earth, making it visually closer to Earth than when it's orbital apogee about 251,000 miles from Earth.

May 2026 is a rare "Blue Moon" month that features two full moons on the first and last days of the month, May 1 and 31.
A monthly Blue Moon occurs roughly once every 2.5-3 years, so we won't see another month with two full moons until December 2028.

Enjoy a few quick captures of the razor-thin Crescent moon as it was setting below the horizon from Hood River, Oregon this evening 🙌

New Snow ❄️ and sunrise ☀️ on Mt Hood, Sunday May 17, 2026
After a long stretch of no rain and warm temperatures, it’s been SO nice and refreshing to have some true Spring weather in the Columbia River Gorge lately. A wild thunderstorm, lots of rain showers, cooler temperatures, and even some new snow in the Cascades! Pretty uncommon event for middle of May!
After hearing that Mt Hood received over a foot of new snow, I set my alarm and headed out early to capture the sunrise. Absolutely gorgeous to see the fresh snow up high and landscape green and refreshed down low.

⚡️ Spring Thunderstorm in the Columbia River Gorge - May 12, 2026 ‼️
Finally, it was about time for a nice action packed Spring thunderstorm in the Gorge!
Feels like it’s been years since the last storm we’ve experienced like this and I’ve surely missed it! Lightning, Thunder, Wind and Rain were so welcome and blissful to experience and capture. Except for the part when a crazy powerful wind gust blew my tripod and camera right over 😭
Thankfully it survived with just some surface wounds 🙏

Enjoy some of the images of this evening’s power and beauty in full force 🙌

Wednesday night May 6th there was some absolutely stunning light and lenticular clouds the Gorge. And it was WINDY!! Oh so windy! Sharing a few images captured on that evening ✨

Also wanting to give a big thanks to everyone who showed up and participated in the 20th annual Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour. Great turnout and it was wonderful to meet many people who follow along here. Much artwork went home with customers over the 3 days, and I've been working with many customers dialing in their orders for beautiful custom artwork in their homes and businesses! Love it!
This community sure knows how to show up and support local artists. It's appreciated and keeps the work coming for all to enjoy 🙌

Sunday morning (quick) story time and a beautiful Columbia Gorge image 🙌
What a Saturday we had at the Gorge Artists Open Studios Tour! Absolutely fantastic to have so many folks come through and enjoy our space and all the artwork. Today, Sunday is the final day so come on by!

I’m sharing this stunning Gorge sunset image (from my archives) and some snapshots from yesterday evening with a quick story.
Yesterday May 2nd, starting in the morning and all the way late in the evening we had people in the gallery, enjoying artwork, stories, slideshows, conversations (sooo many conversations!!) and wine tasting with Tierra de Lobos Winery.
After 8pm I was quite exhausted and also paying attention to the skies, could tell there would be a nice sunset! But also not wanting to cut things short with folks enjoying our gallery…
Better late than never I grabbed my camera bag, tripod and hopped on the one wheel to zoom down to the river. The sunset was all sorts of fiery colors and I passed dozens of people all over the Hood River waterfront with their phones out capturing the beauty! I knew the colors were fading fast, and I was going to mostly miss them! But hey, that’s just fine :) I have plenty of images from my archives (like the one shared here).
It's such an honor to capture share the beauty with you, thanks for following along and supporting my work.
