Steider Studios

Steider Studios Nature, Wildlife photographer, artist, co-owner of Made in the Gorge in Hood River OR, steiderstudios.com. I couldn’t stop making them.

I’ve had a long and blissful art career working with pastels, fiber, clay, glass and photography. I used my photography as reference material in each media and now that I’m semi-retired simply want to be outdoors, immersed in nature. On Fridays, you'll find me at Made in the Gorge, a gallery I co-own, downtown Hood River OR. The more time I spend outside in nature, the more I want to be there. I w

ant to capture everything I see with my camera so you can see it too. Something spiritual combined with luck and circumstance lead me to wildlife viewing opportunities, mostly in the Columbia Gorge. I feel incredible gratitude for each gift of a photograph that I receive. I’ve sold my work since I was 16 years old, starting with macrame tie-dyed belts at the Rose Bowl Swap Meet back in the 60’s. I also sold them to my high school teachers, neighbors and relatives. To this day I can’t stop making things. Although still making art glass, I’m mostly in the field with my camera now. I’ve taken pictures since I was ten when I received a Kodak Instamatic camera for my birthday. I used my photography as studio reference material for 25 years until friends told me that my photos should be seen and hung on their walls as prints. I’m beginning to think that my ultimate goal is sharing nature with people who can’t go where I go to see the magnificence of our natural world. Not just shut ins, wheelchair bound, too infirm or too young, but also those that spend all their time at work or at home taking care of others. I especially want people who can’t get out to know how spectacular nature is, in our back yard and beyond. My photography and original art glass designs make a creative statement in your home and my hand made jewelry is fun to wear. Artful Nature Photography prints on metal, canvas or paper as well as All Occasion Greeting Cards. You can purchase my work 24/7 at www.steiderstudios.com

A sweet series of baby brown bears..... We watched them chase mom along the shoreline until they took a little snooze when she stopped to fish. The last two are so similar, but I like tiny details in each. I won't know which I like better until I see them printed (which I hope will be soon!). Can you choose just one????

Sneaking up on salmon. Brown bears use many methods to catch fish, including stealth! I loved Crystal Lake ~ the water was glacial blue and the day was so calm.....I'm barely home and already thinking about when I can go back! Photos are downloaded and getting culled as I pull out a few favorite moments. I missed some shots I wanted, but watching the continuous bear action was amazing.

We took a float plane out of Soldotna over to Crescent Lake for a perfect day of bear watching. We had the best time with this mama brown bear and her two cubs. The water was glacial blue and Ben, our jon boat captain was awesome with his knowledge of where the bears fished. We learned in 'bear school' at Brooks Falls to NOT carry food or anything scented, so it was five hours without snacks! Worth it!!

I am still downloading photos, have one card to go, then I'll find my favorites from each session.....you know I'll have too many favorites!! 😁

I am back and downloading photos! Our 2nd day out of Homer, we crossed the Cook Inlet on a shallow draft boat.....we should've taken a float plane! We were told it would be rough, but do-able.....however, the captain did NOT tell us to hang on for dear life. We called it the bucking bronco of the boating world, leaping over 8' swells that knocked us off our seats in close-fitting quarters! Luckily we all had a death grip on the seat in front of us and survived the 3 hour torture to only find one bear close enough for photos. Bonus, she had two cubs!! There were other bears after a short hike that were far in the distance and the scenery was of course, lovely. The trip back was not as tortuous, but if I go again, it'll be via float plane unless it's a smooth ride kind of day!! Also, if you go, be sure to ask if there's anywhere to place your backpack besides on top of your feet, lol!!

Brooks Falls ~ no bears??!! We watched fish jumping until the cows came home but no bears. Don't worry, it was not a portend for the rest of my week in Alaska, I've seen plenty of brown bears since! Two more days, then I'll be home and will post some treasures!!

Kind of a fun hummingbird pic with her beak between petals. I arrived home from Las Vegas late last night, and am unpacked and almost re-packed for Alaska! Talk about two extremes, it was 115° in Vegas and is supposed to be in the 60's with a chance of rain near Homer! This week I'm managing our gallery Wed and Fri, then off to find grizzlies! I'm hoping for time to post during my travels, and of course I'm HOPING to see a few grizzlies to share with you!! Not to mention loons, swans and maybe moose!!

Two weeks from today I'll make my way up to Lake Clark National Park to watch bears fishing in rivers and lakes, with a stop the first day at Brooks Falls, from the iconic bear watching platform. Pictured is Bonita at Grand Teton National Park a few years ago with who I'm traveling with yet again.

This coming week I'll be in Vegas helping a beloved family member pack up an entire life and move to a new home ~ a new beginning if you will. Not easy for our family, but will provide an easier future for all.

I don't think I mentioned this sweet little chipmunk at Beacon Rock a couple weeks ago. If pikas don't want to come out and play, a chipmunk or a squirrel or two usually will! I'll be at Made in the Gorge today, if you happen to be downtown Hood River, stop by!!
