My best advice as a business owner is don't give up. Keep building the business you want. Be smart, and stay focused on your goals. Nothing guarantees success as a small business owner, but find the people who are in your corner and ask them for support.

Growing and building a successful business is the best reward for all of your hard work - especially when you were the underdog.

Working and visiting Fauquier County has been one of my favorite perks of working our business. Having the opportunity to learn more about the Fauquier County communities in the Leadership Fauquier program is something I have looked forward to since I saw the applications open up for the 2027 cohort.

Let's take a minute and do a quick audit of your company's logo?

A while back I made a choice to stop trying to impress people - which means I stopped performing and started finding people to collaborate with.

Anyone who goes to networking meetings knows that it can be exhausting trying to look polished, successful or connected enough to gain the approval of others - often higher up on the business ladder. So, I switched my thinking...

I shifted the dynamic entirely. Partnering with people who want to build something meant going from:

Performance to Substance: Impressing others requires me to polishing what already exists. Not a bad idea, but I'm looking to roll up my sleeves and create something new from the ground up.

Status to Utility: When I shift to building, I stop caring about titles, prestige and optics. I start looking for complementary skills, shared grit, and ex*****on capability.

Transactional to Generative: While traditional networking asks "What can this person do for me, or how does my business look to them?, true building asks, "What assets, systems or value can we create together that neither of us can accomplish on our own?"

By making the change to building I am trading the illusion of influence for the reality of actual change and momentum.
