Halloween Trains! • CSX Freight Trains on Saturday at Greencastle, Indiana. We viewed five trains at various times on Halloween afternoon and evening. We parked near the Historic Big Four Depot, built in the early 20th century for the “Big Four” Railroad. The old depot building is a well-known landmark near Control Point 39 (CP39), where the CSX main line intersects with the Monon Subdivision. While there, we listened to the train radio communications with the ThinLine Radio app. — Train enthusiasts can monitor radio traffic east and west of CP39 in Greencastle, Indiana on their smartphones with ThinLine Radio. Reception from mile post 28.0 to 46.5 with 9 channels (MOW channel just added), including AAR008, AAR012 and AAR064 (160.230 MHz, 160.290 MHz & 161.070 MHz). CSX Night Trains on Thursday evening at Greencastle, Indiana. B223, coming off the Monon Subdivision, waits to head west as M679 (formerly M206) travels Westbound on Track 2. We parked near the Historic Big Four Depot, built in the early 20th century for the “Big Four” Railroad. The old depot building is a well-known landmark near Control Point 39 (CP39), where the CSX main line intersects with the Monon Subdivision. While there, we listened to the train radio communications with the ThinLine Radio app. and got another video of the railroad kitty “Greta” enjoying a meal of canned food Elizabeth provided. — Train enthusiasts can monitor radio traffic east and west of CP39 in Greencastle, Indiana on their smartphones with ThinLine Radio. Monday morning, October 26, decoding SSTV (Slow-Scan Television) images via the Amateur Radio transmitter (RS0ISS) operated from the Russian Service Module on the International Space Station (ISS). This time the ISS was at 77° elevation, passing over Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina. Frequency 437.550 MHz FM +/- Doppler Shift. I’m using an ICOM IC-705 Transceiver and Comet GP-9 Dual-Band VHF/UHF Vertical Antenna at 25’ elevation using the SDR-Control iPad app. Because of Doppler shift, I’m tuning the receiver frequency slightly to compensate. — The International Space Station (ISS) also operates a cross-band FM repeater (IORS) that allows licensed amateur radio operators to communicate via a 2-meter uplink and 70-cm downlink, generally using an uplink of 145.990 MHz (PL 67 Hz) and downlink of 437.800 MHz. Open House at McKim Observatory on Friday, 23 October 2026 with beautiful clear skies and their historic Clark 9.53 inch refactor telescope showing over 330 visitors Saturn and the Moon. We brought our Dwarf 3 smart telescope from DWARF LAB and set up viewing on the observatory lawn. Friday night’s phase was Waxing Gibbous, with roughly 92% to 97% of the lunar surface illuminated. — There will be another McKim Observatory Open House on Friday, October 30 from 8:00 – 10:00 pm. With viewing of Saturn and dark sky targets.
