Next on the Grand Rapids Station series is Station 9!

Station 9 is located on the corner of Plainfield and Comstock Blvd NE. Home currently of Engine Company 9 known as “High Above The Rest. This station was built in 1951 and use to be the home of Engine 14 before it was renumbered with Engine 9. This station is nestled in the quiet Creston Neighborhood and serves the NE part of the city.

Engine 9 responds to about 4 calls for service a day and responded to 1,468 alarms in 2025. Engine 9 continually responds to mutual aid to Plainfield Township for structure fires and covers a decent portion of I-96 and the busy Plainfield Corridor.

Apparatus info: Engine 9 “High Above The Rest” 2015 Rosenbauer Commander Pumper with a 1500 GPM pump and a 750 gallon water tank and CAFS.

This machine is on the list to be replaced by a new HME machine eventually.

Delayed post: On Monday July 27th Grand Rapids fire crews were dispatched to a structure assignment in 11’s on the corner of Wealthy and Eureka SE. Rescue 2 landed with smoke showing from the roof and stretched a line for fire attack. Truck 2 arrived and went to the roof, additional companies secured a water supply, performed searches and opened up for fire attack. Crews were able to get a quick knock down on the fire, the cause is still under investigation.

Some photos of the new Grand Rapids Engine 2 known as “The Engine”.

Engine 2 was placed in service June 18th at the MLK Street fire station and will serve the citizens of Grand Rapids for many years.

Engine 2 is a 2026 HME Core 62, Spectr II custom low hose bed pumper. This machine features a 1500 GPM pump with a 600 gallon tank. It also features ladders on the side of the machine and a return of the booster line/trash line. This will be the new spec for many new engines coming soon to the streets of GR.

Next on the Kent County Department series is Cannon Township Fire Department.

Cannon Township Fire Department serves Cannon Township located in the north east part of Kent County covering 36.97 square miles with a population of 14,379. This department ran a total 777 alarms for service in 2025 and runs 2-3 calls average for a normal day.

The department has 2 stations of which only 1 is staffed 24/7 by 2 personal and that is station 2. Station 1 is the paid on call station and station 2 also has paid on call personal above the full timers. The department runs 3 Engines one of which is equipped with extrication equipment (E4), 2 Tenders, 2 medic units that are equipped with a combi tool for minor extractions, 2 brush trucks, a utility, a hovercraft for the many lakes in their district and a UTV for the rural and wooded area’s.

The post will start with the apparatus at station 2 since it’s the staffed station and then will go to station 1’s apparatus.

STATION 2

Engine 3: 1999 HME/3D Pumper with a 1500 GPM pump with a 1000 gallon tank and 30 gallon foam tank.

Engine 4: 2003 HME/Toyne Pumper with a 1750 GPM pump with a 1000 gallon tank and 30 gallon foam tank.

Tender 6: 2020 Freightliner 108SD/Toyne with a 1750 GPM pump and 3000 gallon tank.

Medic 9: 2023 Ford F-350 Medic Unit

Brush 7: 2025 Ford F-350 Superduty Brush unit with a 250 gallon tank and 50 GPM pump.

Engine 8: 2009 Spartan/Toyne Pumper with a 1750 GPM pump and 1000 gallon tank and 30 gallon foam tank.

Tender 5: 2015 Freightliner 108SD/Toyne with a 1750 GPM pump and 3000 gallon tank.

Next up on the Grand Rapids Station series is Grand Rapids Station 8.

Grand Rapids Station 8 is on the corner of Covell Avenue and Leonard Street NW. Home of Engine Company 8 and Reserve Engine 14, 8’s serves the far northwest corner of the city including the neighborhoods of the Westside Connection, West Grand and Cherry Run.

Engine Company 8 was founded in 1883 and has been quartered at their current engine house since 1987.

Engine Company 8 responded to a total of 1,866 alarms for service in 2025, Engine 8 responds on automatic aid the city of Walker for structure fires in parts of Walker station 2’s district.

Engine Company 8: 2015 Rosenbauer Commander Pumper with a 750 Gallon Tank with a 1500 GPM pump and a compressed air foam system.

Reserve Engine Company 14: 2004 Seagrave Commander II pumper with a 750 Gallon Tank with a 1500 GPM pump. Engine 14 was refurbed in 2017 by RPI and formerly served as Engine 2.

Next up on the Grand Rapids station series is Grand Rapids Station 2 known as the “House of 2’s.” Stationed on the corner of MLK and Ionia.

Station 2 is home of Engine 2, Truck 2, Utility 2, Hazmat 1 and Hazmat 2. Station 2’s specialty is Hazmat, most of the members assigned to the house have a variety of Hazmat training and certifications. Utility 2 is stationed there and is the departments blocker unit and responds to all incidents on the highway to act as a buffer and provide traffic blocking for crews operating on the highway. Station 2 use to be one of the so called “Super stations” back in the day when Engine 7, Engine 10, and Truck 2 use to be stationed there. Station 2 continues to be a very busy station serving the south side of downtown and Southside of Grand Rapids.

Engine 2 was the third busiest Engine in GR last year running a total of 2,814 alarms. Truck 2 ran a total of 1,284 alarms, Utility 2 ran 677 alarms and the hazmats ran an estimated total of 35ish combined calls in 2025.
