Christmas is always a little different when we stay home instead of traveling to be with our kids. But that’s part of life, our children grow up, build their own traditions, and create beautiful memories with their own families. ♥️And truly, that’s exactly what I would want for them. We’ll head out in January and do our Christmas celebrating with them then. I am already dreaming.

There were years when waking up on Christmas morning without the ones you long to be with felt heavy. I even remember not putting up a tree sometimes because I thought, what’s the point if my kids aren’t here?

But over time I’ve learned how important it is to build new traditions. I started opening our home, inviting staff and friends over for Christmas dinners, and finding little ways to pour love into the day — no matter who’s around.

And even when it’s just Curt and me, I try to make the day feel as special as possible.

This morning we shared breakfast with good friends, then made music with a few more, and later enjoyed a beautiful roast with another friend.

So today truly was a good Christmas even though I wasn’t with my precious grandbabies, daughter, and son.

As long as I get to celebrate with my family at some point, I’m more than okay.

Love is still here, and the heart of Christmas itself is becomes more tangible with each year.

Thank you Jesus for putting on skin to win us back.

This sweet couple has been part of our church family for a few years now, and it amazes me how differently you see people when you pause long enough to look at them through a lens. Church life can be funny that way—we gather for a few hours, in a familiar rhythm, in the same setting week after week. And somehow, without meaning to, those brief moments become the entire picture we paint of one another.

Not that I ever questioned the kindness or the depth of this beautiful couple—not at all. What I mean is that when you step outside the church walls, when you take time to really see someone, to catch glimpses of who they are in the quiet, in the in-between, in the moments where they’re simply being themselves… everything deepens.

Through my lens, I watched the way they love each other—gently, playfully, genuinely. I saw the way they laugh together, the way they move in step, the way they truly enjoy one another. These are the parts you can’t always see in a few hours on a Sunday morning.

And it reminded me again that every person has a whole world inside them—stories, tenderness, joy—that only reveal themselves when we take the time to look a little closer.
