Waiting for the lunar eclipse I watched the moon rising behind trees listening and taking in all of the wild sounds that surrounded me.

Nearly every summer our we’d get as many people as we could from our family together & we would float down this river. Some of us would float and some would snorkel all the way down long before I had a wetsuit or decent camera I started preferring to snorkel all the way down occasionally I would poke my head up with my lips starting to turn shades of blue & to find a good log like one of the turtles might bask on to feel the sun on my skin and so I could let the floats catch up and always ending the day with tons of great food and catching up at the picnic tables with like 20-30 of us. I recently did an impromptu trip with a few folks from our family and it’s been around 10 years since the last big family trip. My mom got to ride on the front of my paddle board and it was so exciting to see the joy on her face.

While the rules have changed on this River over the years the beauty and magic of this place will forever be in my heart and such an incredible way to spend time together and just a few days after my cousin passed away knowing she was with energetically with us and would want to see us enjoying this River with each other.

Every moment I spend here is a reminder of why I want to continue to love and protect these spaces.

From the moment I looked through my lens at the moon last night I knew where I wanted to be for this lunar eclipse. When it was at its fullest coverage I watched the ground shadows of the trees get swallowed to darkness and heard a scurry in the woods in front of me at the darkest moment. Then the moon slipped behind this pine tree and I photographed it a few times through the tree before moving my set up farther down the trail to continue my Timelapse. Around 2:30 am I heard an eagle briefly singing in the distance and wondered what was going on. I almost stayed the night here but was too tired to set up my tent and remembered I left my jet boil and coffee at home… so it took everything in me to get home but I slept yhd best sleep I’ve had in a while.

I may have never ventured outside of a book if it wasn’t for my cousin Billie Jo she helped me tap into to my adventurous and rebellious side. We would go up to the North Carolina Mountains every summer where my Granny Goolsby family was from. It was the 80’s and we hopped on some wheels and rode down the side of the mountain in Joyce’s drive way and really started to gain speed when we wrecked and slid in the rocks that lined the road up to her house when I got my first badly skinned knee it was horribly painful but worth it! I still remember the weird golden brown liquid Joyce put on it. But I will never forget the laughs we had about that ride. Life is meant to be lived with deep laughs and skinned up knees in the deep summer of the North Carolina mountains.

Many years later I got a real motorcycle and she was the first person wild enough to be my first passenger. I had never taken a passenger. That gave me the confidence to have 8 more passengers. We drove through every type of weather and every kind of road and we would take the long road back to Hawthorne where she lived with my sister and I lived just a short hop & skip through the woods!

Shes moved to Oklahoma and after a long bout of phone tag we finally talked a month ago and ended our conversation talking about the springs.

I arrived just before nightfall but it took me hours to get here and was immediately met with one of my biggest fears… The fears were starting to win and get bigger until a locust landed on my underwater housing. I reminded myself why I was there and started to listen to the way the springs were talking to the stars. To fully see the light I was sitting fully in the darkness a darkness that didn’t even come to touching how I felt when I found out my cousin Billie Jo died a few days after I photographed this moment. Billie Jo I’m beyond grateful for your presence in my life and for all of the adventures that we’ve shared over the years. Now you’re off to the next greatest adventure and Dolly Parton just a few days later! There’s something about Dolly Parton that reminds me of those summers in North Carolina!

Watching the stars talk to the morning light while meteors faintly brush across the sky making morning wishes. What is your greatest hope and wish for yourself , for the world for someone in your life.. these are the things I think about when I’m out with the sounds of the night realizing I forgot bug spray as the swarmed ahead … I hoped they were not the bitey kind 🦟 becayse I didn’t want to turn around since morning would be coming soon and washing away the perseid meteor shower. Can you see some of the meteors… keep in mind this is in a light poluted area of the sky. I also got lucky because a faint breeze and almost coolness in the air.. somehow I wasn’t bitten and stayed until sunrise.
