Elizabeth Park in West Hartford felt like it was made for this session. The wildflower gardens, the greenhouse, the quiet bench tucked into the trees — we moved through it all and let the location do what it does best.

If you’re expecting and wondering when to book — here’s everything you need to know.

When to book your maternity session
The sweet spot is between 28 and 34 weeks. You’re visibly pregnant, still comfortable moving around, and the belly has that beautiful round shape that photographs so well. Book your photographer by week 20 so your date is secured. The last thing you want is scrambling in the third trimester.

How to prepare
Pick an outfit with texture and flow. Linen, gauze, anything soft. Avoid busy prints. Coordinate with your partner but don’t match exactly. Bring a second look if you want variety. Eat beforehand. Comfortable shoes matter more than you think.

What to expect
We start slow. Soft prompts, easy movement, nothing forced. Most couples tell me they felt awkward for the first ten minutes and forgot about the camera for the last forty. That’s where the real images live — when you stop performing and just exist together in this season.

Connecticut maternity sessions are booking now for fall. If your due date is between October and January, now is the time. 🤍

Get on a call before you book. A conversation tells you things a portfolio never will. Do they ask about you? Do they listen? You’ll spend your entire wedding day with this person. How they make you feel in a ten-minute call is usually how they’ll make you feel on the day.

Read reviews somewhere they can’t curate. Google and WeddingWire are where the honest ones live. Look for patterns — communication, delivery time, how couples felt when it was over.

Ask what happens between booking and the wedding day. A photographer with a real process will answer this clearly. A vague answer is useful information.

Confirm they’ll personally be there. Some studios book under one name and send a different photographer on the day. Ask directly. Put the answer in your contract.

Pay attention to how you feel after talking to them. If the conversation feels like a transaction, the experience probably will too.

Save this for when you start the search. 🤍

DM me if you want to talk through what to look for or if you’re ready to book a discovery call.

We started slow — soft prompts, easy movement, just getting them comfortable. That’s always how it goes at the beginning. A little awkward, a little self-conscious, wondering what to do with their hands.

And then something shifts.

It always does.

By the time the light went golden they weren’t thinking about me at all. The connection was just there. It was always there. I just had to wait for them to forget I was watching.

That’s my favorite part of this job. I can give all the direction in the world, but when two people are genuinely happy and in love? The camera just finds it.
