Back in the film days, I was contacted by Yale Prof. Edward Tufte about photographing an image for his new work, "Visual Explanations", which turned out to be an image of an original Jean de Brunhoff drawing from the Babar series (Babar's Dream, 1933). His son Larent de Brunhoff brought the drawing over and I made the image. Prof Tufte called me and thought that one corner of the image was out of focus, so it was brought back to the studio. Upon examination by Tufte and De Brunhoff, it was found that the corner in question was drawn in pencil and not ink, thus making it appear softer, which de Brunhoff had never noticed. I did re-photograph it for them anyway. It was a pleasure working with both of these gentlemen, and de Brunhoff's wife Phyllis Rose, a renowned author, critic and Wesleyan professor. This memory was jogged this morning reading of de Brunhoff's death at 98 years of age. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/25/style/laurent-de-brunhoff-babar-obituary/index.html
My condolences go out to his family, friends and the many lovers of Babar and his adventures.

My profile image was made a few years ago when I decided it was too cold here and ventured out to Joshua Tree NP. Temps in the high 20s / low 30s. Made some nice images there, it's a place where you could spend a lifetime and never make the same image twice. Returned home to more snow than there were places to put it.

For the ones who never made it back home.

I spent a few days this week with the terrific staff of the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, CT photographing vintage clothing and accessories. Getting to see and photograph beautiful things and great works of art is why I really like my profession.
