Okay ladies, you've given me some AMAZING answers the last two Fridays, so I have another question for you.

Finish this sentence:

“I would finally book a portrait session for myself if _______________________.”

No right answer.

I'm genuinely curious what you would put in that blank.

When I photograph a woman, I'm watching for the moment AFTER she thinks I'm taking the picture.
The shoulders drop.
The expression changes.
She stops performing for the camera.
And for just a second, she's simply there.
Those are often my favorite frames.
Not perfect.
Present.

One of my favorite moments in a portrait session happens at the very end, when we sit down together and look through the photographs.

Recently, I asked one of my clients, “Do you feel like you see yourself in these?”
“Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.”

As we kept looking, she laughed, got emotional, and stopped on different portraits:
“Yes, queen.”
“That brings emotions to me.”
“Oh, that’s like I’m talking to her.”

And looking at one image that seemed to hold part of her journey, she said, “I wouldn’t be where I am today, or who I am today.”

That’s what I want.

Not a photograph where you’re busy checking your chin, your stomach, your arms, or all the things you’ve learned to pick apart.

A portrait where, for a moment, you see the whole woman.

The personality. The strength. The history. The joy. The woman you’ve spent all these years becoming.

Sometimes my job isn’t to transform a woman for a photograph.
It’s simply to help her recognize what was already there.

I asked women this weekend:

“If I photographed you exactly as you are RIGHT NOW, what would you want that portrait to say about you?”

I gave them a list.

Strong.
Beautiful.
Confident.
Becoming.
Enough.
Still here.

But then women started adding their own words.

Resilient.
Overcomer.
Present.
Capable.
Healing.
Fierce.
Happy with who I am.
Ready to tell my story.

And one woman simply said:

“This is me. Nothing more. Nothing less.”

I think THAT may be what I love most about photographing women.

There isn't one word that defines us.

And maybe a portrait doesn't need to show the woman you hope to become someday.

Maybe it should preserve the woman you are right now.

Because she has a story too.

If you've been reading these conversations and quietly thinking, “Maybe it's time for me to step in front of the camera,” I'd love to photograph you.

Send me a private message and tell me what you would want YOUR portrait to say about you.

Let's start there.

Let us rewrite the script.

Whoever told you that you were not beautiful enough, thin enough, young enough, worthy enough, feminine enough, confident enough, perfect enough…

They were wrong.

You were never meant to fit someone else’s definition of enough.

You do not need to become more worthy of being seen.
You do not need to wait until you feel more confident.
And you certainly do not need to be perfect.

You are already art.

Come as you are.

That is the heart of As I Am.

United Way of Northwest GA Women’s Leadership Council hosted a wonderful Lunch & Learn today with Rachel Smalley.

It was truly inspiring to learn more about Catherine Evans Whitener, a woman who, at such a young age, developed a tufting business that would ultimately help transform the city of Dalton and create opportunities for women to work and earn an income at a time when that wasn’t typical.

Rachel has beautifully brought Catherine’s story to life in her new children’s book, Tufted, which officially releases next week.

I love learning about the women whose courage, creativity and determination helped shape the community we call home.

Thank you, United Way of Northwest Georgia, for putting together such a lovely and meaningful event today. Thank you Smith House Restaurant for catering a delicious box lunch for the event.
