This weekend, I competed in my 1st Hyrox race in DC.

I knew HYROX would be challenging, but there’s a big difference between training for something and actually experiencing it. Eight 1K runs, eight workout stations, and a whole lot of lactic acid build up in between. I felt every part of the race, especially those last few stations.

I walked away seeing plenty of areas where I can improve but going into it, I really tried not to put too much pressure on myself. My only real goal for my first HYROX was to finish. Thinking back on the race, my biggest takeaways had nothing to do with my time or performance.

More than anything, I was surprised and appreciated the community around HYROX. I expected a tense and highly competitive atmosphere, but it was anything but that. There were people of all fitness levels and ages competing, and there was a strong sense of support throughout the race, from other competitors, the crowd, and the staff. It felt competitive without feeling exclusive or elitist. It was a very inclusive the environment.

Big thank you to Centr for sending me the equipment that helped me train and prepare for my first race. I’ll be sharing a full race breakdown soon with more on how it went, what I learned, and what I’d do differently next time.

Next up is the Portland Marathon in October. After that, I’m looking forward to competing in another HYROX soon!

Never thought I’d ever say I ran Hood to Coast with my Nike teammates 🏃🏾‍♂️.

If you’re not familiar, Hood To Coast Relay is a nearly 200-mile relay race here in Oregon that starts at Mt. Hood and finishes at the Oregon coast. Teams are made up of 12 runners, split between two vans of 6, with each runner taking on 3 different legs along the way to the coast. Our team finished in a little over 31 hours, which meant for 31 hours, we basically lived in a van. I was runner 6, and my 3 legs were roughly 10 hours apart and added up to 16.5 miles.

For years, this was one of those things I’d hear about and think, “Why would anyone ever want to do that!?” Yet somehow, here I am after running it!

All the marathon training definitely had me ready for my runs but nothing prepared me for running on just a few hours of sleep and being stuck in a van till we finished.

This was an experience unlike anything I’ve ever done but I enjoyed everything that came with it. Everyone on my team showed up and showed out and I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished!

This was the 1sf of 3 athletic events I’m doing over the next 2 months ✅.

Next up: my first HYROX in DC next weekend 🏃🏾‍♂️💪🏾!

Doing something I never thought I’d do. I’m training to run the Portland Marathon in October 🏃🏾‍♂️💨.

I’ve never been a runner. Running has never been a part of my routine, ever. I’ve honestly hated running for the longest time. However, I’ll be turning 40 later this year and I figured what better way to challenge myself entering this next decade than to do something that will challenge me physically and mentally more than anything I’ve done before. I’m not even thinking a time, the goal is simply to cross the finish line.

I’ll see all you runners in October!

Continuing the conversation around mental health this week and how for me, fitness has played a key role in my mental health over the years. How much does movement play a role in your mental health?
