Spent some time back in Iowa and was able to capture a youth baseball game. It wasn't my first game, but got me thinking of a few things:

Youth baseball photography is all about preparation and anticipation. The game moves fast, and if you’re waiting to react, you’ve already missed the shot. Learn the game, read the moments, and anticipate where the action is headed.

Be ready for everything — shifting sunlight, tough weather, even dust flying everywhere. Protect yourself, protect your gear, and adapt on the fly.

But don’t just capture the play — capture the emotion. The celebrations, the reactions, the intensity, and the moments in between tell the real story.

These are the moments that prepare you for the big show.

Want clients to keep calling you back for future events? It's more than just taking great photos... trust me on that one.

Here are the 3 things that actually make photographers re-bookable:

1️⃣ Be easy to work with
Show up early, communicate clearly, and stay flexible. Professionalism gets remembered.

2️⃣ Deliver fast & professionally
Quick turnaround + organized galleries = trust. Reliability wins every time.

3️⃣ Capture what matters to THEM
Don’t just take cool or pretty shots. Understand the client’s goals and deliver the moments they need most.

Master these 3 things, and you’ll spend less time chasing clients… and more time getting called back.

This is NOT sound financial advice and it is most definitely NOT remotely good marriage advice.

It's a joke, folks! A joke.

But in all seriousness... if you need a new camera I can recommend several places to go to get the best deals! All you have to do... ask.

What people love about youth soccer is the joy- the smiles after a great play, the energy on the field, and the sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves. They build friendships, gain confidence, and discover what they're capable of when they push themselves.

And it matters. These moments shape character. They teach life lessons that go far beyond the game.

Its a process. Win or lose, you are going to learn something. Its not a game meant to break you, it is designed to help you grow as an individual and maybe more importantly, as a teammate.

When kids enjoy the process, they grow... as players AND as people.

Throwback to when photographers/videographers had very limited seating at South Dakota State University in Frost Arena in Brookings, SD.

It was so crowded, that I opted to shoot from the stands and the results were less than ideal. However, when you are shooting the top team in the state and covering throughout his impressive collegiate career... you do what you need to do to get the shot!

Why does shutter speed matter?

When used intentionally, shutter speed helps tell the story of movement within your image. By choosing whether to freeze motion or allow it to blur, you can transform a simple photo into a dynamic moment captured in time.

For example, imagine photographing a hockey player speeding across the ice. You might use a fast shutter speed to freeze the player sharply in focus, while still allowing some motion in the background to suggest speed and action.

On the other hand, if someone is spinning a ball on their finger, a slightly slower shutter speed can reveal the blur of the ball, showing that it’s actually spinning rather than just frozen in place.

Motorsports photography is another great example. A powerful racing image might show a NASCAR car in sharp focus while the wheels appear blurred, clearly indicating that the car is moving at high speed. This balance between sharpness and motion creates an overall more dynamic photograph.

Easy enough, right?
