Do you ever feel like you need to organize every photo before you can finally make a photo book or keepsake?

You don’t.

Sometimes the best place to start is with one small, meaningful project — one trip, one school year, one family event, one box of printed photos, or one part of the story you do not want to lose.

In this week’s blog, I’m sharing why one photo project is enough to begin, along with a personal example from my own 2024 travel book.

Read the blog here:

You do not have to organize every photo before creating something meaningful. Learn how starting with one small photo project can help you preserve memories without overwhelm.

The end of the school year can leave you with a stack of papers, artwork, awards, worksheets, and photos — and it can be hard to know what to keep.

You don’t have to save everything to remember the year well.

A few meaningful pieces can tell the story beautifully: a handwriting sample, a favorite artwork piece, a school photo, a special award, a teacher note, or a memory your child still talks about.

This week’s blog shares simple ideas for choosing what school memories are worth saving, without letting everything pile up in a box.

Once you have cleared out the blurry photos, duplicates, and extras, the next step is not to organize everything perfectly.

It is simply to sort what is left into groups that make sense to you.

Maybe that means Christmas, birthdays, vacations, school photos, one child, one year, or photos that need more information.

From there, you can choose one group and break it down a little more if it helps.

A broad “birthday” pile might become birthdays by child, by year, or by photos that still need names or dates.

Simple note cards are enough to begin.

This week’s blog walks through how to break your photo piles into smaller groups without getting overwhelmed.

Sorting photos this way can be simple, but it still takes time. If your boxes of photos matter to you but you do not have the time or energy to work through them yourself, Mohr to Life can help sort, organize, and preserve them for you.

Learn how to take broad photo categories like birthdays, vacations, Christmas, or school photos and sort them into smaller, easier-to-manage groups.

For a lot of people, the hardest part isn’t the photos.

It’s knowing what to do next.

That “in-between” stage—after the decluttering, but before things feel organized—can feel overwhelming in a different way.

Sometimes, having someone walk you through that next step makes all the difference.

It doesn’t have to feel this heavy.

If you’re not sure what to do next with your photos, try this:

Group → Choose → Keep

Group them in a way that makes sense to you

Choose one group to focus on

Keep what matters most

That’s it.

You don’t need a full system to get started.

You just need one simple step forward.

There’s something about coming across a photo you forgot you had.

One moment you’re just sorting…

And the next, you’re pulled right back into a memory you hadn’t thought about in years.

Those are the ones that remind you why this matters.

Not everyone organizes photos by year—and that’s okay.

For some people, it works perfectly.

But for others, it doesn’t feel natural at all.

Because when you go looking for a photo, you’re not thinking:

“What year was that?”

You’re thinking:

“That was Christmas”

“That was our vacation”

“That was just a regular day at home”

Your system should match how your brain works.

Not the other way around.

When you go looking for a photo…

Do you think in years?

Or in moments?

👉 “That was 2018”

OR

👉 “That was Christmas”

I’m curious which one comes more naturally to you.
