I'm so excited for summer in the city! Next up is San Diego, then Denver. I haven't visited Denver in the summer, so I am pretty stoked about that. 😁

For my professional photographers...

Have you heard that saying, “Show what you want to book”? I’m not sure if that is the exact saying, but it is something like that.

Anyway, I love my negative space compositions. I’ve literally always been this way, and I’ve always shown them.

On Facebook, you have some photographers who will come in and say, “You should crop closer.”

And yeah... I should, and I DO! But I just didn’t share those on Facebook.

My clients see all sorts of compositions. Close... far away... you name it. But what’s funny is that they ALL enlarge those negative space images.

Why? Because I consistently showcase them.

Anyway... Happy Sunday! I am headed to San Diego AND Denver!!! I have space for both of those workshops. If you want all the info, check out the comment section.

💡Sidebar for my gearheads.. I used two different 85mm lens for each of these images. One was captured in Denver, and the other captured in San Diego. 😁

This image was captured using only natural light, and that was the goal when I captured it. I didn't care about the sky because the subject was the focus. You can't really see the environment. I had a strobe handy, but I specifically wanted to capture this with natural light.

I made a post yesterday talking about why I chose to use a strobe to capture the image instead of natural light.

There were some people who came in and challenged me on the spot I chose to take the picture, and they said that is why I had to use flash.
..and that is the disconnect between those who embrace flash and those who don't...

I love natural light, and I am good at capturing natural light images. But it IS limiting. What does "limiting" actually mean?

Let me tell you from someone who will always call themselves a natural light photographer....

With natural light, you will always have to MOVE.

Period. That is the answer. You have to move to good light.

With flash... you never have to move. The world is your studio.

And most photographers who push for natural light do not PLAY with natural light. They look for open shade and play it safe. No bright sun..no mixed lighting. They also do not take pictures where the background isn't full of trees.

And if they do that, they will only do it when it is late in the day.

That's it. That is the difference.

Now I've captured natural light only images that were captured wider, and I capture the sky, clouds and sun. I play with light!

But can those images be created whenever you want to capture them? NO!!!😅

Stay woke and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

I am headed to San Diego in a couple of weeks for a workshop and we have a few spaces that opened up. Let me know if you're able to make those. And the AW Teaches store has a fabulous code you guys can use to get a major insight to my brain! 😅

I've seen talk about photographers using flash when there seems to be what appears to be "good" natural light. For me, when I’m looking at good natural light, I’m not only looking at what it’s doing to the person.

I’m looking at the *entire* scene.

In this setup, the background had exactly what I wanted. The sky looked good, the buildings weren't completely washed out, and I was able to capture the depth I wanted. But exposing for all of that meant my subject was definitely underexposed.

This is when I would bring in flash. Could I have captured this without flash? Absolutely, but the final image would not look like this.

From here, you can decide how much flash you want to use. I chose to add just enough to capture the image how I wanted.

That’s the part that some people miss sometimes. Flash does not always have to change the look of the image. Sometimes it just completes what the natural light already started. 😁

Today is the last day the code for my store is active. Don't miss out! That info will be listed below.

Heyyy Everyone!

It's launch day! We just dropped the latest tutorial on AW Teaches that I decided to call - "It's Not Nighttime" 😅

It gives you guys a full breakdown regarding my location choice and why. The lighting set up ( which many wouldn't expect ), and the full RAW to the final image.

When I shared this image before I received comments like -

"Too much photoshop for me, not natural, AI look"

This is a great example of what good glass and lighting can do, and how *MINIMAL* editing is needed when you do what I like to say - shoot for intention. 😁

I had so much fun at my Philly Light Exposed Workshop. The light we all created was perfect all around. After I was done with that, I headed over to New York to film some great video content with Nikon. I am super excited for that to come out.

And in the midst of all of that, I seriously forgot about telling you guys about the store, and a great way for you to get your hands on lots of new things! If you are ever curious about my lighting, my editing, what the RAW images look like, I do not hold back on AW Teaches. It's all laid out there.

Check out the section below for the info on how you can slice everything in half on AW Teaches!

Indoor flash can overpower a room really fast. My goal here was to match the ambient light, because it is really easy to darken the background. I wanted my subject lit, but I still wanted the room to feel like the room you know? 😊
