Foreign languages continue to present a challenge.

The door was willing to talk.

Unfortunately, it appears to speak Greek.

I, on the other hand, speak English, a little computer programmer, and fluent coffee.

As a result, negotiations were unsuccessful.

Fortunately, doors photograph well even when communication breaks down.

That tree was not a very good translator.

Confession from Gozo:

I came here expecting to photograph buildings.

Instead, I seem to be photographing sunlight.

The buildings are simply holding it in place long enough for me to notice.

Gozo has this remarkable honey-colored limestone that catches the evening light and turns entire streets into shades of gold, cream, and amber.

This balcony stopped me in my tracks. Not because of the architecture, but because of the way the light settled onto the stone.

Sometimes the subject isn't the thing.

Sometimes it's what the light is doing to it.

Green Door

Or perhaps chartreuse.

Or perhaps the color that happens when sunlight spends a hundred years arguing with paint.

Gozo seems to specialize in colors that don't exist in paint catalogs.

Reflections on Spiegel Street.

I've always been drawn to reflections.

They remind me that what we see is rarely just one thing.

Every surface contains another story if we're willing to look long enough.

Bird Fly-By Story Time.

Amsterdam always felt like a city made for stories.

Dark clouds gathering over old rooftops, birds crossing the sky, and the feeling that someone just stepped out of a novel and disappeared around the corner before you arrived.

Primary Colors, Amsterdam Style.

Blue sky.

Red roof.

Yellow wall.

Black slate.

A reminder that sometimes an image doesn't need a story. Sometimes the story is simply seeing.

Amsterdam Mystery #17

I walked past this storefront and spent several minutes trying to determine whether it was:

A fortune teller.

A jewelry shop.

A law office.

Or the headquarters of an organization dedicated to the study of mystical crustaceans.

I am still not entirely sure.

Amsterdam remains delightfully confusing.

Photography has made me appreciate simple things.

A patch of evening light.

A weathered window frame.

A shadow moving across a wall.

The longer I photograph, the more convinced I become that extraordinary photographs are often hiding inside ordinary moments.

Residents call this the alleyway leading to the house.

The cats call it something else.

I'm not sure what.

Probably "The Long Corridor Where Humans Occasionally Deliver Food and Admiration."

Either way, after a few days in Gozo, it became one of the most familiar walks in my world.

One of the things I loved about Amsterdam was that every building seemed to contain a small mystery.

A doorway.

A passageway.

A hidden courtyard.

A glimpse of something just beyond view.

The city rewards curiosity.
