When people start thinking about family photos, a lot of people tend to think of fall (which is a beautiful time of year - so if your heart is set on fall, I get it!)

But I know how hectic life can be once school starts, sports begin, and the holidays start creeping closer. One of my favorite things about summer family photos is that they're already checked off the list before all of that begins.

Photo Tip Friday! Today's tip is an important one: Embrace the chaos.

I know you're probably worried about how your kids will do during family photos. Will they smile, will they be tired and melt down, will they run off, will they argue...etc. Lots of variables. So, today's tip is to encourage you to not worry about it. Easier said than done, I know.

But when these moments have passed, you won’t remember whether everyone looked at the camera. You’ll remember your toddler’s curls, how your son squeezed his little arms around your neck, how everyone laughed when one of the kids said something out of left field and mildly embarrassing.

That’s what I want to preserve. Not perfection, but connection.

So if your family session feels a little chaotic, just let it happen. Years from now, these photos will take you back to how it felt during this time. We remember feelings most clearly. That’s the important stuff.

One thing I always do for every kind of session is take individual portraits of each child. They change so fast and I think it's important to get an image of what they look like right now. Especially the little features that may go away as they get older.

Even when I look back on pictures of my kids from only a few months ago, I can see subtle differences. It's a quick and simple thing, but those little details are so awesome to be able to look back on 😍

I am super excited to share some news
I rented an office space and will be using it as a studio coming soon!

For years, most of my work has happened outdoors or in clients’ homes, and I’ll still continue doing that. But having a small indoor space of my own opens up so many new possibilities, especially during Buffalo winters or for families wanting something simple and relaxed and I’m so excited to see what we can create here!

It’s still a work in progress, but I can’t wait to bring it to life and share it with you soon!

I hear this concern A LOT! And I totally get it. You’re making the investment of time and money to get these photos done and are worried that your kids might just be having an off day and the photos won’t turn out.

But the best photos happen when kids are being kids. See the final photo from this reel. We got the cutest image and we were being silly and having fun.

I will make sure you’re in the good light and in a flattering position and the rest is just photographing your family and kids just as you are ❀

Proof that the best photos don't happen when everyone is looking at the camera.

They happen in the moments after a silly prompt, when siblings cuddle into each other or someone makes a silly face and everyone laughs. That's where the magic is.

What's a little everyday moment with your kids you wish you could freeze forever? For me, I wish I could freeze my kids' genuine, loud, full-bellied laughter ❀
