I have to be honest — this is one of my favorite parts of the whole process.
Last fall I photographed this beautiful family at Allaire State Park. Mom, dad, their two young adult daughters, and their two dogs surrounded by all that golden autumn color. It was such a warm, joyful session and I knew right away the painting was going to be something special.
I have been working on the commissioned oil painting ever since, and I am so happy with where it landed. I am sharing some of the process here — a few close-up sections of the canvas and a shot of me at the easel — because I love pulling back the curtain on what actually goes into one of these. Every layer, every brushstroke, every hour of looking and adjusting and looking again.
The painting is now ready for my clients to come see it in person at the studio. We will do a live viewing, make any final refinements together, and then it goes to archival varnish and framing before it takes its place on their wall for good.

I want to tell you something that doesn’t happen in the world of fast photography.

When a commissioned oil painting is finished — really finished, varnished and framed and ready — we don’t just ship it. We drive to meet you.

Our clients come from all over New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. And when the portrait is ready, we’ll often find a halfway point, pull up, and hand it over in person. Not because we have to. Because the moment someone holds their finished portrait for the first time is too important to leave to a shipping label.

We’ve seen the tears. We’ve seen the silence. We’ve seen someone just stand there, holding it, not quite ready to put it down.

Happy Memorial Day. 🇺🇸
Today, a lot of families are doing exactly what they do every year — driving to the shore, setting up the umbrella in the same spot, watching the kids run into the surf while the grandparents settle into their chairs and smile at something only they can see.
It's a tradition. And traditions are exactly what we were made to photograph.
Over the years, Theresa has had the privilege of photographing families across generations. She's photographed grandparents who've been coming to the Jersey Shore since they were children — and then photographed those same grandparents watching their own grandchildren do the same thing. Full circle. It never gets old.
There's a moment — it usually happens right before sunset, when the light softens and everyone stops posing and just is — that's the moment we live for. That's the image that ends up on the wall. That's the one your kids will point to someday and say, "That's when we were all together."

Happy Memorial Day weekend, friends. 🌊
Every year, right around this time, I start getting the messages. "We want to do a beach session this summer — are you still taking families?"
And every year, it puts a smile on my face. Because it means the shore is alive again. Families are gathering. Summer is real.

There's something about the Jersey Shore in golden hour that feels genuinely timeless — barefoot kids chasing the tide, grandparents watching with that quiet, knowing smile, parents trying to hold it all together while secretly soaking every second in. We've photographed it hundreds of times and it still gets us.
