Left behind

This is one of those images I know will stand the test of time. I’m proud of it because it marks a moment when I began trusting my instincts.

I kept gravitating toward including the mangled wood, even though it felt out of place. In the end, that tension is what makes the image interesting - it invites the viewer to ask questions.

It also mirrors how I’ve been feeling lately. I feel somewhat out of place in India, but that very feeling has been pushing me to ask deeper questions about life

Captured just 10 minutes apart, these photographs had very different beginnings. I spent considerable time refining the composition of the first scene, while the second was a frame I nearly overlooked, assuming it wasn’t strong enough to pursue further. In fact, it’s the only image I made of that second scene.

It’s interesting how the way you feel in the field can make you overlook something your intuition knew was worth paying attention to all along. Sometimes it just takes a little distance to see it.

I miss being out in Death Valley photographing these dunes. Focusing more on black and white on the last trip opened up so many more opportunities and finding scenes like this made the experience an unforgettable one!
