Scooter rides, coconut water, and HATI-HATI — my three favorite things in Bali.

HATI-HATI means “heart-heart” in Indonesian — take care, slow down. And honestly? That’s my biggest takeaway from four months here.

For most of my life so far, I felt time was short. Every moment needed to be earned, spent worthily, productively. But Bali quietly shifted something in me. At the end of the day, who knows? Life can also be long. There’s really no rush.

To live slowly. To watch the kids grow up without blinking through it. To waste time on things that mean nothing. To sleep in. To take my time finding what does mean something.

HATI-HATI. Take care. Slow down. 慢慢来.

One week left before we head back to Boston. Nine months on the road - it’s somehow already over, and somehow it’s made a lifetime of memories: traveling village in Europe, family time in China, Bali with old friends and new ones.

Beyond grateful. 🌿

Life update from ✨

We just experienced one of the most special holidays in Bali - Nyepi, also known as Silent Day. It’s one of the most important Balinese Hindu celebrations, marking the New Year in a way unlike anywhere else in the world.

The day before Nyepi is filled with energy and excitement. Every neighborhood brings out massive demon effigies called Ogoh-Ogoh, parading them through the streets with loud music and crowds gathering to watch. These figures represent negative energies, and the parade symbolizes cleansing them away before the island resets.

Then, everything changes.

On Nyepi itself, the entire island shuts down for 24 hours - no travel, no work, no lights, no noise, airport closed down, even the internet goes out. Everyone stays home to rest, reflect, and reconnect. The streets are completely empty. No cars, no people , just silence, broken only by the occasional distant sound. It feels as if the world has paused.

In a modern life where we’re constantly stimulated and pushed to be productive, Nyepi feels incredibly powerful. It’s a rare moment where doing nothing is not only allowed, but expected. A day to slow down, sit with your thoughts, embrace the quiet and boredom, and simply be.

Moments like this are a beautiful reminder of why Bali feels so special to us.
