Bellefonte PA - James Harris Home...

James Harris (1755-1826), married to Ann Dunlop, in 1795 came to Centre County and with his father-in-law, Col. James Dunlop, laid out the town of Bellefonte. James and Ann had seven children: (1) Jane, (2) John, (3) Eliza, (4) James Dunlop Harris, (5) William, (6) Joseph, (7) Andrew.

1. Jane married Rev. James Linn, D.D., a Presyterian minister. In 1806, he was one of the first principals of the Bellefonte Acadamy.

2. John was a doctor. Dr. John Harris opened the Bellefonte Dispensary. Later he was consul at Vienna.

3. Eliza was married to Dr. Daniel Dobbins. He came to Bellefonte in 1807.

4. James was a civil engineer and in construction of canals in central Pennsylvania. In 1825 he explored the proposed routes for the canal to connect the eastern and western waters. He was appointed assistant to N. S. Roberts, Esq., who was charged with construction of the section adjoining Pittsburgh extending 31 miles to the Kiskiminetas. In June 1827 James took charge of the line and the constructing of the canal from Blairsville to Johnstown about 28 miles. In 1829 James had charge of the line, four dams, 30 locks and two large acqueducts when he was suddenly removed by the influence of James S. Stevenson, acting canal commissions on the Western Division. James presented the subject to the Legislature in 1830 which caused the defeat of Stevenson for U.S. Senate. In 1831 John Mitchell and James Clarke, overruling Stevenson, appointed Harris engineer to locate the whole West Branch line of the Muncy Dam to the mouth of the Bald Eagle. Harris was associarted with bulding the western portion. In 1834 he was engineer of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. In 1836 Harris was appointed engineer of the extension of the North Branch Division and to supervise the Susquehanna Division.

5. William was a civil engineer who worked on the Bald Eagle Canal and the Snow Shoe Railroad. County treasurer (two terms) and State Senator (1847-1850).
