Behind the Lens: Celebrating Dr. Powell’s 50th Birthday 🎉✨

There are moments when I’m photographing an event and realize I’m not just taking pictures—I’m capturing a piece of someone’s story.

Dr. Powell’s 50th birthday celebration at Hodel’s was one of those moments.

As I moved through the celebration, I watched family and friends come together to honor his life, his journey, his accomplishments, and the relationships that have helped shape his story.

I captured the laughter, the hugs, the smiles, the heartfelt moments, and those spontaneous interactions that may seem small in the moment—but become priceless memories later.

That’s what I love about storytelling through photography.

It’s not always about looking at the camera.
Sometimes it’s the look someone gives the person they love.
Sometimes it’s the laughter between poses.
Sometimes it’s simply being surrounded by the people who came to celebrate YOU.

Because years from now, these photographs won’t just remind Dr. Powell of his 50th birthday celebration at Hodel’s. They’ll bring back the feeling of being surrounded by the people who came to celebrate his life.

✨ EMIT SPOTLIGHT: Aware & Armed Summer Bootcamp ✨

Sometimes preparing our young people for the school year means giving them more than school supplies.

It means giving them confidence. Awareness. Knowledge. Skills. And a voice.

Today, EMIT had the opportunity to spotlight Dess Perkins, founder of emPOWERment, and the incredible work happening through the Aware & Armed Summer Bootcamp for boys and girls ages 11–18.

With the support of Burgos Martial Arts, these young people were given hands-on opportunities to learn self-defense, awareness, and skills designed to help them feel more prepared and confident as they enter a new school year—and beyond.

This wasn't just a bootcamp.

It was an investment in our youth.

It was about teaching them to recognize their surroundings, make smart decisions, understand their personal power, and know that their safety matters.

And that's what EMIT is all about:

EMPOWER. MOTIVATE. INSPIRE. TEACH.

We don't just tell stories—we shine a light on the people who are creating opportunities, building confidence, and investing in the next generation.

Healing begins the moment someone finds the courage to tell the truth.

The inaugural It Hurts to Heal: The Brotherhood Experience with Dr. Niesha Davis-Massey created a space where men were encouraged to be seen, heard, and valued. It wasn't about pretending to have all the answers—it was about honest conversations, shared experiences, and discovering that healing is stronger when no one has to walk the journey alone.

Every story shared became an opportunity to EMIT—to Empower through vulnerability, Motivate through resilience, Inspire through authenticity, and Teach that true strength is found in facing what hurts so healing can begin.

As the bride stood before her husband, reading the vows she had written from her heart, emotion filled the air. Standing just behind her as one of the Maids of Honor, her daughter quietly wiped away her own tears, overwhelmed by witnessing her mother's love story unfold.

She wasn't crying because she was losing something—she was moved by everything her mother had found: love, joy, hope, and a new beginning.

As I stood behind the camera for this powerful portrait of the women celebrating the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® 50th Anniversary, I saw more than a group standing together. I saw generations of leadership, excellence, service, and sisterhood united in one frame.

Photography is about more than preserving a moment—it's about telling a story that will continue to inspire long after the shutter clicks.

This image reminds us that leadership is strengthened through unity, purpose is multiplied through service, and every woman has the ability to EMIT light into the lives of others.
