Roseate and a Smile - Smith Oaks Rookery

I captured the Roseate Spoonbill at the Smith Oaks Rookery, High Island, TX. The Texas Professional Photographers Association was conducting a workshop hosted by hosted by Roy Nierdieck. While flying straight towards me the shape of its bill makes it appear to smile.

If you enjoy images such as this, I recommend visiting the rookery as Spoonbills, Egrets, Cormorants, Herons of various varies are all residents there.

Smith Oaks Sanctuary, High Island, TX

Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary is 177 acres of fields, woods, wetlands and ponds. Sixty-four acres were purchased by Houston Audubon with the help of Houston Audubon members, friends, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The remaining 110 acres were donated to Houston Audubon by Amoco Production Company. The Rookery in the middle of Claybottom Pond has become a favored roosting and nesting place for thousands of waterbirds.

This Cormorant image was captured at Sunrise during an April 2026 Texas Professional Photographer Association workshop hosted by Roy Neirdieck.

North Jetty south of Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary, Texas

The North Jetty is a great spot for Pelican, Egrets, and variety of different species. I was able to capture this Brown Pelican on its low approach before it landed in the marsh.

Taken at Turkey Bend Recreation Area near Austin TX.

Wild flower season is a big deal in Hill Country it doesn't last long but the birds celebrate as well as the humans. This was taken in the early morning haze next to Lake Travis. I could hear him singing from a distance finding him was another matter but eventually I was successful
