Every moment is different because every photograph is made with intention. I’m not looking for a formula or trying to recreate someone else’s wedding. I’m watching for what’s real, what’s happening between people, and the moments that belong only to you.

That’s what makes documentary wedding photography personal.

I’ve known about Highlands, North Carolina for most of my life. My aunt and uncle have had a second home there for years, so long before I ever picked up a camera as a wedding photographer, I knew about Old Edwards Events . When I moved home during COVID, I reached out hoping to get on their vendor list, and it became one of my favorite Highlands NC wedding venues almost immediately. The setting, the light, the way a day unfolds there. It is one of those rare properties where everything just works for a wedding.

So finding out about the fire at The Farm at Old Edwards hit hard. From what I have heard, the Pavilion took the most damage and the barn has damage from firefighting efforts, but the covered walkways, hardscape pathways, and most of the landscaping are holding up. What gets me most is thinking about the couples now navigating this, on top of everything vendors in the Blue Ridge Mountains have already been through since 2020 and again with Hurricane Helene in 2024. The Old Edwards event team started the rebuild process immediately and is already working to relocate an entire fall of weddings to other properties. That deserves real recognition.

I also want to thank the firefighters who responded. I have worked alongside fire departments through search and rescue, and I know what it means to put yourself in danger for something that is not yours to protect.

Old Edwards will be back, and knowing this team, it will come back even better than before. Until then, and until I am back up there for a wedding in June, here are some of my favorite moments from one of my favorite Highlands wedding venues.

I shoot flash and low light constantly, which means the wedding does not have to work around the photography. You pick the venue and the timeline that feels right for you. I will figure out the light.

That is part of what documentary wedding photography actually means to me. Showing up ready for the day as it is, not asking you to change it so I can get a shot.
