Lauren and I connected over social media. Interestingly we both were cultural anthropologists who had worked in South America.
As we talked, I realized she wasn’t simply looking for beautiful photographs. She wanted someone who understood why this quiet corner of southern Colorado meant so much to her family. For more than twenty years, Tucker, her fiancé had returned here from Texas to fish, reflect, and reconnect with himself. She wanted to honor the sacredness of this place via photos. She wanted a documentary approach to the chaos, silly and more intimate moments.
As I pulled up to her cabin as she was getting ready. Thunder echoed through the valley and rain was in store. That beautiful smell of petrichor filled fresh mountain air.
But not one person complained. Everyone leaned into it. The storm added to that magical elixir.
Later, the rain cleared and Tucker led us to one of his favorite stretches of the Conejos River. We skipped rocks, wandered the banks and got muddied up.
Then we celebrated with friends and family at the Red Bear Haus in Horca. No pretentiousness, no set schedule…just letting the good times roll.
By the time I had to head out, I honestly didn’t want to leave. Days like this remind me that the places we love become part of our life stories, and when we can share them together and connect deeper with nature and those closest to us…thats the definition of sacred. You can’t put any price on it. And the moments make your soul dance.
Lauren and Tucker, thank you letting me share and for capture your celebration.
