9.3.26 The bucks are losing their velvet. This doe doesn't look overly impressed.

The boys are getting itchy. A deer sheds the velvet off its antlers when rising testosterone levels cut off blood flow to the velvet, causing it to dry up and create an uncomfortable itch.

Here is part 2 of the bucks observed on the "electric golf cart safari." The last picture is a buck that wasn't with the group and he was far away hunkered down in tall grass. You can see his antlers well and he is the first buck of this season that I have found without any velvet on his antlers.
This velvet is highly vascularized, containing blood vessels, nerves, and specialized cells that deliver oxygen, minerals, and nutrients to the growing bone beneath, allowing antlers to grow at one of the fastest rates of any mammal. They shed their velvet covering from late August to early September.

8.30.26 was like being on a safari on the electric golf cart with 2 friends when we encountered a few bucks hanging out together. I am posting some today and some tomorrow so check back again tomorrow. Just too much to share in one day. I only have one photo so far of a buck without his velvet, which I will share tomorrow. He was separate from this group and is a big guy far away and hunkered down in the grass.

8/2026 I would say he enjoys finding mealworms in my yard. Look how he holds one for his snack. Eastern gray squirrel

8/2026 Some more red foxes found recently. I believe the first 4 photos are of one of the siblings shared previously. Initially, I thought they were different foxes but the location is not far from where I found the siblings and comparing the pictures and markings of the fox, this one looks like one of those siblings. They were sighted near the den where I shared photos earlier this year of mom (vixen fox) nursing her 7 kits. The last photo is a fox in the rock area of the place I call "the watering hole", a water basin area off of McKuen Way.

8.24.26 I saw this wild turkey who wanted her photo taken walking along the side of the road so I obliged. We seem to have a lot of wild turkeys here in Carbon County PA.
