Bored cleric during Moharram, Yazd, Iran.

On 9 Moharram, also called Tasua, men dress in black to mourn Imam Hossein on the day when Abbas, brother of Hossein, was murdered in Karbala. They listen to a preacher, sing religious songs, and beat their chest with their hands.

In the city of Yazd, Yazd province, Iran, the largest gathering happens in Hosseinyeh Hazireh.

Moḥarram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year when warfare is forbidden. For Shia Muslims, it is considered to be the second holiest month after Ramadan.

Shiites mourn the martyrdom of Imam Ḥusayn by abstaining from joyous events. Instead, Shia Muslims hold many events to offer condolences to Imam Husayn and to honor the martyrs by prayer, reading supplications, and holding charity events.

Tazieh was celebrated in the Hussainyeh of the village of Hamaneh on 8th Moharram. Tazieh is a performance which reenacts the story of Hussain and his followers in 680 A.D. in the lands of Karbala, before Hussain was murdered on 10th Moharram.

On 8th Moharram, Ali Akbar, son of Hussain, was the first to volunteer to go to the frontline and support his father. The renactment is made as a tragedy during which women in the audience cry.
